The Syncmaster 940BW is a widescreen 19 inch monitor from Samsung specified with 5ms response time and a dynamic contrast ratio of 2000 to 1. Outwardly, the monitor comes in matt silver which covers the bezel and highlights the edge of the circular stand. It is pleasant to look at and is good to see against the usual matt black screens or shiny black plastic ones that are more popular these days. The stand it comes on can be adjusted to find the idea height and tilted forwards and back for similar ergonomics. If you need to turn the monitor round though, the base does not swivel. I like the way the cables plug into the back of the monitor, I always prefer connection ports where you plug cables in vertically, this creates a cleaner look and you can put the monitor further back on desks or against walls. There are five little buttons in the bottom right corner to access the menu and adjust settings. These I never use because you start onto a slippery slope of trying to eek out minuscule changes that are subjective anyway. The last button on the screen is for power and emits a low blue glow when turned on. Picture wise, the screen has a resolution of 1440x900 which is perfectly adequate for this size of screen, but individual pixels are obvious and create a slightly etch-a-sketch curves and diagonal lines, more apparent when using Windows 7 and its shiny and rounded icons. This also applies to text and can make that hard to read at times. It is perfectly bright in well my well lit office space, and good viewing angles means that I can share my screen with those around me easily three abreast. The contrast ratio of this screen in real life is good as well, watching iPlayer videos, the blacks don't appear washed out and there are no annoying smearing from fast moving scenes. In the end I would prefer a larger screen and one with more pixels, 1980x1080. The extra room on screen is more productive. The Samsungs lower resolution makes working with documents and spreadsheets an eyesore and causes fatigue to set in quite quickly. Watching video on the other hand is a pleasant experience, showing deep colors and coping with fast action. An OK choice, but you really should consider one with better resolution, larger screen or better yet, both.
This review is composed of two parts, first with review suitable for common users and the second part for more demanding users. =======Samsung SyncMaster 940BW for "dummies"======= I purchased this LCD monitor quite a while ago and am still satisfied with it. This is a 19" LCD monitor, so that means it will satisfy most of average and even some more demanding consumers. It is a bit wider than most of its brothers, but that is more a plus than anything else; because movies get the perfect format because of that and when you play games you really fall into it. It is great for playing games, working and watching movies with the whole family, since it also has a wide angle, unlike many others. The picture is pretty sharp, so I am sure you will enjoy it. Another thing that is really great with this monitor is that you can easily rotate it, take it off its stand and set it on the wall (as a small plasma TV)... It is easy to adjust (brightness, contrast...), since it has all the buttons on its boarders and the buttons do not disturb the look of this monitor, they even make it look classier... It also has an auto adjust button which does an amazing job. You can get it at a fair price, well the best price possible for this quality, you can get a new one for about 200$ (100£) or less and a used one for a whole less. I am a proud owner of this monitor and it has not caused me even the slightest problems while using it. I would recommend this one to everybody and I can say that for this price this is the best monitor you can get your hands on. What comes in a box: * Analog Cable * Monitor * Digital Cable * Power Cable * Instruction Manual * Driver/Utility CD * Monitor Base Overall: * great price * great resolution 1440 x 900 * great picture * convenient wide screen * totally worth every cent =======Samsung SyncMaster 940BW for advanced users======= Features: * MagicSpeedTM 4 ms (G to G) response time * Widescreen format, 1440 x 900 resolution * 160°/160° horizontal/vertical viewing angles * 500:1 contrast ratio * Analog/Digital dual inputs * Exclusive MagicTune,TM MagicColorTM and MagicBrightTM II technologies What comes in a box; * Analog Cable * Monitor * Digital Cable * Power Cable * Instruction Manual * Driver/Utility CD * Monitor Base This great screen has a 19 inch viewable side and since it is a widescreen it is perfect for graphics designers since you will never run out of space on your desktop and graphics software. It has a grand resolution of 1440 x 900 and an excellent response time of 4 ms. It is also perfect for viewing movies and stuff since it has a wide horizontal and vertical viewing angle of 160 degrees. Brightness is 300 cd/M2 and the contrast ratio is 500:1.It has a analog and digital video interface type. Dimensions; height -14.2 inch, width -17.3 inch, depth -7.9 inch, weight -9.3 lbs You adjust the screen by clicking the menu button which is on the bottom right side of the monitor, there are many things you can adjust (brightness, contrast, gamma, color control, coarse, sharpness, fine...) but you can also click the auto adjust button which really does an excellent job itself. The screen is also adjustable physically, you can rotate it, tilt it or even remove the handle and set it on the wall (as a small plasma TV). After many months of use, I have tested this monitor in many ways, movies, playing high demanding games, running graphically challenging Windows software and I was never even a bit disappointed. Only thing that I found troubling in the beginning was that I could not set the highest resolution, that's where the Driver utility CDs come in handy. In order to achieve the highest resolution you have to install the monitor's drivers. And if you consider its price of only 200$ (100£) new, I think you will hardly find a monitor that has such characteristics at this price. All in all I am more than satisfied with this monitor and I strongly recommend it to anybody. Overall: * great price * great specifications * great response time of 4 ms, the screen does not blur when playing demanding games * wide working surface * many adjustable functions * high resolution Thank you for reading the review. You just don't get the entire picture without the SM940BW. It's a new and better perspective in monitors that goes with you to work or play with maximum resolution in a wider, better format.
