Advantages: Great screen
Disadvantages: Funny case
The ViewSonic to me isn't like any other flat panel monitor. Most of the flat panel monitors out there look cool, futuristic sleek and very sexy.
The ViewSonic however looks big and bulky and it stands out like a sore thumb. It does however grab your attention, so I guess this may be a good thing? Well, it may be a good for your local p.c store. There's no way you could walk through the monitor section of the store and miss this thing.
If you're buying a flat panel monitor for the first time, you may not have a problem with its looks. But if you're buying a replacement and you've been using the super, sexy, sleek models you may struggle getting this lump to fit in.
So, why does this monitor have such a large feel to it? Well the main reason is that this monitor has huge speakers built in to the panel at the bottom. A lot of people i know are totally against built in speakers, this is usually because of the not so good sound quality you get from them. I found them o.k, but I was using this monitor at work, I never really had the chance to test them out properly by pumping out my my music from them. Watching video clips on youtube and streaming music from various sites the speakers seemed to work fine. I didn't pick up on any vibrations and my desk didn't start to rattle.
With such a large case, you may feel a bit upset when you get it home to find that the screen size is only 20". It's not all bad, you can stretch the resolution all the way to 1,680x1,050. The image quality was excellent too. All the text looked very sharp and clear to read. Infact I would say the 20" screen looks near perfect. You get a very nice, clear and simple on screen menu to. I normally struggle with monitor menus, this one I could scroll through with my eyes closed.
A big downside is you don't get any USB ports I have all sorts of gadgets screaming out for USB ports so this was a big let down. Another little thing I didn't like were the buttons. They look good but they're very small. I would press the wrong one quite a lot while fiddling about in the menu.
I hardly ever use p.cs for gaming. But I have heard that this monitor is very good in that area. Games are so graphic intense these days and some monitors may lag a little. However I've been told no matter what you throw at it, it keeps running smoothly.
There isn't really any huge features, neither is there any groundbreaking technology built in to this monitor. It does it's job and it does it very well indeed.
So for your money you're getting a high quality screen built into a unusual looking case. The main thing to remember with this monitor is Beauty is more than skin deep.
