Advantages: Reasonably priced, evenly back light, matt finish
Disadvantages: Not height adjustable , confusing controls
This monitor is classified as a 19" TFT and connects to a PC via DVI connector. The monitor is essentially the same as the VX924 but this one has 8ms refresh time as opposed to the 3ms of the VX924. This means that theoretically there should be a little more smearing seen in fast action games and DVDs but in reality you would be hard pushed to tell the difference.
The advangtage of the DVI connector as opposed to the previous VGA connector is that it is digital and so there is less chance of artefacts and distortions being seen on the screen.
The screen itself has a dull matt finish unlike someother glossy ones. The good thing is that reflected sunlight is not so prominent on the screen and therefore less distraction. The downside is that true blacks and whites are not as vivid as on a screen with a glossy finish to it.
This makes the screen more suitable for office applications and the odd game but for people that want vivid colours (photo editing, movie watching, serious gaming etc.) then a glossy screen is probably better.
The screen does not have any integrated speakers and so these need to be bought separately. The stand is a bit limiting and only allows for a small degree of tilt and is not height adjustable. However, the stand does offer a cable tidy compartment in which the connecting cables can be hidden away neatly.
There are five buttons mysterious labelled 1, 2, up, down and power. The 1 button calls up the on screen display and this allows the contrast and brightness (amongst others) to be altered using the up down keys. The 2 key is used to exit the on screen display. This is a slightly puzzling arrangement and more intuitive labelling would have been better.
This monitor has a 8ms refresh rate. So this means that for fast moving videos and games little ghosting (if not any) will be seen. Moreover the colours represented are accurate to the original view and are bright and clear. The screen backlighting is even throughout and in the corners too providing an even picture.
I do believe Viewsonic have a Class II pixel policy which means that you might get a few dead pixels when you buy it. Fortunatly I have had two and have had no dead pixels so they seem quite realiable. Most other manufacturers offer the smae policy except for the more professional units (more expensive too) that will ge guarenteed to have no dead pixels.
A slightly cheaper alternative to the VX924 but you do get 8ms refresh rate as opposed to 3ms for the VX924. You shouldn't be able to notice the difference between the two but those watching fast action movies and games should spend the extra £30 and go up a model to the VX924 to be totally satisfied.
Summary: Cheaper alternative to the VX924 but has slower refresh rate.
