... come, not a great start but that did seem to settle down after a while so all was not lost, or so we thought. We both waited with excitement for the arrival of Johnny..... sadly though, what we did get was a rather lack lustre version of the Johnny we had expected, I think it would be fair to say, and of course I can only reflect our opinion, that David Erik in the role of Johnny appeared to be generally underwhelmed and dare I say a little bored by the proceedings throughout the show. There appeared to be a...more

Premium Review Dirty Dancing (Musical): Dance your way to the live show (1321 words)
by - written on 14/09/09 (Very useful, 96 readings)
Rating:

I was lucky enough to go and see Dirty Dancing at the weekend in the West End. It's a show I have been wanting to see for quite a while, but making the time and having the available money to see it has always been a factor. The show is rated a PG, and we wondered if this was correct having seen the film, but there was no language and the only sexy scenes in the musical were done very tastefully so I would agree with the rating after watching the musical. Having read good reviews about the show, I was excited to be outside the theatre waiting to go in, looking at the posters of some of the cast. I had heard that Johnny and Baby had been represented well in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I *carried* a *watermelon*??! (1138 words)

First, I should say that there are some spoilers in the review, so if you're determined not to find out what happens in Dirty Dancing, don't read on! When I was growing up, Dirty Dancing was one of my absolute favourite films. It still is, in fact. It sounds (and is) incredibly cheesy but that film meant such a lot to me! It had the romance covered, it had good-looking actors (and Swayze WAS good looking back in the day!) and it felt quite meaningful at the time - looking at society in terms of class issues, abortion, and the way the world was changing in America in the 60s, with the aftermath of the Vietnam war and holidays to Europe becoming more popular. It ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dirty Dancing (Musical): I had the time of my life (581 words)
by - written on 01/08/09 (Very useful, 25 readings)

Go to see this musical without trying to compare it to the film and you will have a great time, spend the entire show comparing it to the film like the woman sitting behind me and you will not. Ever since watching Dirty Dancing I have always loved the songs, characters and storyline and so, when my mum and I booked to see the musical, I couldn't wait. Luckily the show exceeded my expectations! Dirty Dancing is currently performed in the Aldwych theatre in London which, in itself, is impressive with its beautiful decor and old fashioned feel. The theatre is easy to get to and we found that Covent Garden was one of the nearest tube stations to the theatre. On ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Decent show, but could have been better... (771 words)

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting my lovely mum in London. Mama Pixis77 has a thing for theatre shows and musicals, so we bought some tickets for the Saturday afternoon performance of Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre. Whilst i'd much rather watch a stage adaptation of Saw, I am not averse to romantic-cheese. Mum is a wheelchair user, so we bought our tickets directly from the theatre, over the telephone. Wheelchair users and their companions pay a reduced price. We purchased two top price tickets (ordinarily costing £60) for £35 each. Most impressive. On previous theatre outings, i've had to deposit mum at the doors whilst I struggle ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dirty Dancing (Musical): No one puts this show in the corner! (930 words)
by - written on 26/07/09 (Very useful, 150 readings)
Rating:

I have to confess to being a big fan of musical theatre and I absolutely adore the film Dirty Dancing, which is why when I was offered a ticket for the live production at the Aldwych Theatre I jumped at the chance. I was really looking forward to seeing how one of my best loved films had been transferred to the stage - and although in many ways it is a magical performance, I honestly don't think that it is anywhere close to being as good as the film! For anyone who does not know the story, Dirty Dancing is set in the early sixties and takes place at Kellermann's - an American holiday camp with lots going on. Frances 'Baby' Houseman, her sister Lisa and their ...  Read the complete review

Products similar to Dirty Dancing (Musical)

Moving, sweet and thoughtful, but still makes time for high quality knob gags. Less jokes, so may not appeal to comedy fans as much as previous years.

Unabridged, shifts seamlessly between characters. Drab.

Fast, varied, unpredictable, funny. Maybe not quite as X-Files as some fans may hope.

An epic show of immense variety No UK tour

A good modern theatre with off-West End productions Perhaps lacking in character
