Hull New Theatre (Hull)
Advantages: Taking the kids and sitting in the box is so special for them
Disadvantages: In the box you can't see al lthe stage though
The Hull New Theatre is a Grade II listed building. It was opened in 1939 and is the main theatre in the City of Kingston Upon Hull. It is currently the main theatre in Hull but it may come under some competition soon when the Hull Truck Theatre establishes itself in its new location as part of the St. Stephens development.
The Hull New Theatre is used by the musicals, opera, ballet, drama, and children's productions that travel the country. It is also used every Christmas for the annual pantomime.
It has had many improvements and works done to it over time with its most recent taking place in 1995. This included alterations to improve the access for less able bodied patrons via a lift from Jarrett Street to the Foyer and a lift from the foyer to the lounge bar.
My last visit to this theatre was to go and see the Disney Musical production of Beauty and the Beast. For this we sat in one of the boxes as I managed to book the tickets very early on.
One thing with sitting in the boxes is that you can not see part of the stage. Which ever side of the box you are sat on you will not be able to see the back part of the stage at the same side. This can get annoying when you can not see what's happening and you know from the audience reaction that something important is happening.
However I found my experience very enjoyable sitting in the box you are not bothered about upsetting the people sat next to you or them annoying you. This is especially good if you have kids as they love sitting in a box as they feel so special.
The theatre itself despite being old is very clean and tidy inside and has a good atmosphere for a theatre of its size. You can book through the website, on telephone or in person at the booking office.
Parking can be a bit of a problem if the theatre is busy as there are not that many parking spaces around the theatre. There is a small car park at the rear left-hand side of the theatre that can be used as well as the on street parking. Note though that the on street parking is pay and display for most of the day.
One thing to watch if you are taking along young children. Cars tend to drive up to the front entrance of the theatre to drop people off and this can be a problem with cars parking all over to pick people up. Make sure you keep an eye on your kids and a firm hold of their hands as it can get dangerous outside as the theatre is empting.
For those coming from outside there area to see a show here it is not the easiest of places to find. The address and contact details are as follows; Hull New Theatre, Kingston square, Hull, HU1 3HF and the telephone number is (01482) 226 655.
The following is the council webpage where you can search to find their page for the theatre to get more information:
Summary: Make it special for your kids if going and a box is available
