For years I had wanted to see this show but never got round to going. When I found out it was going on tour I realised if I didn't go soon I could miss out altogether. I chose to see it in September last year at the Manchester Opera House.
Legally Blonde is based on the book written by Amanda Brown and the film which stars Reese Witherspoon of the same name. The musical began on Broadway in April 2007 and started at the West End in January 2010. It won three Laurence Olivier Awards, one of which was "Best New Musical". In 2011 and 2012 it went on tour across the UK.
The story follows a fun and bubbly girl Elle Woods who absolutely loves pink. After her boyfriend broke up with her because she was not "Serious" enough, she follows him to Harvard Law School to prove him wrong.
After being accepted into Harvard by an unique personal essay she discovers an enemy Vivienne, who much to Elle's disgust is Warner's (Elle's ex) girlfriend.
Elle has difficulties showing her knowledge as people judge her by her pink and girly look but she is soon reassured by a friend at a local hair salon.
She is soon reassured that you can have brains and beauty and with the help of her friends tries to win a legal case for a former Delta Nu, Brooke, who she believed was wrongly imprisoned.
The cast I saw included Faye Brookes as Elle who was perfect for the role. Gareth Gates as Warner and Jennifer Ellison as Paulette (the salon worker).
The music is fantastic and makes you want to sing and dance. It fits perfectly into the story and really makes the musical fun to watch. Some of my favourite songs are "Omigod You Guys" and "So Much Better".
The dancing has various styles which includes Irish dancing during "Legally Blonde Remix". These are choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
The show has many different settings of which include, the Harvard law campus, delta Nu house, Elles home of south California and her very pink room at Harvard. These change regularly and seamlessly.
The look and costumes of the show are important and predictably mostly pink. It is Elles favorite colour!
I absolutely loved the show and if I had the chance to go again I would. Although it is not on tour in the UK at the moment I have watched it on YouTube again and again, and of course bought the CD. I highly recommend people to watch this if they have seen the film as it is even better. So much better than before!
Summary: You will love it
