Advantages: The historic building is dramatic in itself, and will only add to the enjoyment of the top-quality pays and musicals, even pop concerts!
Disadvantages: Expensive, formal and doesn't have a good panto which is what makes a theatre for me!
The Empire is the largest theatre in Liverpool and the suronding area. This is the theatre to take Granny to see a West End musical, not the trendy, mid-day places where you can see usually good amature productions. I have always been pleased with the Empire, but I only give it a visit once or twice a year (maybe more if they have a good new West-Ender on). It's expensive (tickets, refreshments and merchendise), but steeped in history. Visited by the royals, this Victorian theatre with it's scarily-steep upper gallery is a good treat. Abba Gold is an example of the West End imports the Empire gets, and which are popular with the small amount of people in Liverpool who have time (and money) not to be nicking cars. A great musical, packed with Abba hits, and a bit of drama thrown in there. A great thing to go and see, with brilliant sound and lighting. But I'm gona stray from Abba reviews, and just give you a bigger picture of the Empire. So here goes... It's been stage to Phantom of the Opera, Jospeh, Dr. Doolitle, Steps/Boyzone/Ronan Keating and Oh! What a night. It does occasionally have excellent productions on by the near-by Birkenhead Amature Dramatic Society (Oliver, Annie ect.) but these are few and far between, with prices still quite high for such a class of a production. And also, in my opinion, this is not the place to take kids for the panto. the story line often goes over the adult's heads, let alone childrens, it's reasonable formal and are quite stiff on you bringing your own drinks ect. in, even though theirs are outragous. It's also an expensive half-day out for 4 kids! Still, the quality of the plays are second to none, with the recent refurbishment meaning that more and more West End and pop concerts can be staged at the Empire. A good place to go if you're visiting Liverpool. Sorry if this has strayed and not helped on the Abba front, I couldn't
find a section for the Empire in general!
