Advantages: Brilliant Musical Tribute
Disadvantages: Many seats have restricted view
The Story:
We Will Rock You is set on a futuristic Earth which has become one big consumer market place run by Global Soft Corp, headed by ‘Killer Queen’ (who is a bit like Cruella De Vil) and the planet has been re-named ‘Planet Mall’.
Everyone wears the same clothes, listens to the same music and thinks the same way (seems we are well on our way then!) No-one has any original thought anymore and all music is computer generated, live music is banned! Anyone showing individuality is sent to the ‘Seven Seas of Rye’ to be brainwashed (to the tune of Flash).
The girls are called the ga-ga girls and only care about shopping and meeting a man and the guys are called the boyzone and are all like teen pin ups.
There are some rebels who call themselves ‘Bohemians’ and believe that once the world was free and everyone could express themselves. They take on names of the ‘Greats’ such as Britney Spears and Cliff Richard and live at the ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ (Tottenham Court Rd Tube Station).
They tell of a legendary figure – Freddy Mercury of Queen – who foresaw the future and hid instruments which could be found by someone worthy and could bring back rock n roll.
Could this worthy person be young Galileo Figaro who dreams song lyrics and wants to change the world? Global corp think so and capture him, along with a young girl with similar ideals who Galileo re-names ‘Scaramouche’.
They embark on a quest to discover the legendary instruments, aided by the Bohemians looking for their ‘Rhapsody’ while being hunter by Killer Queen and her minions.
All the songs are based around Queen’s greatest hits, hence some of the names!
My Opinion:
The players in this musical piece are all excellent, especially Hannah Fox who plays Scaramouche, and her quips will have you laughing out loud, as will the leader of the Bohemians ‘Pop’ and Killer Queen,(Mazz Murray),especially her face when she is being waxed! Hee hee.
The singing quality is excellent, with Mig Ayers’ Galileo having an annoying speaking voice but a great singing voice, as does Scaramouche.
They were extremely energetic leaping about the place and used the stage area well.
I love Queen songs and had heard that this would be a disappointment as only the man Freddy can sing these hits, but although in one or two places I did think they weren’t totally up to scratch, on the whole I was very impressed by the quality of the adaptations.
Obviously when the hits We Will Rock You, We are The Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody are played, these are the highlights (don’t forget to pick up your Glow-Stick on the way in)., but the whole performance was outstanding (although a couple of the dancers were off time occasionally).
The Facts:
Written by Ben Elton (so it is comedic) and musically supervised by Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, the entire performance is based around Queen’s greatest hits.
We Will Rock You is showing at the Dominion Theatre which is right next to Tottenham Court Road tube in Central London.
Tickets cost between £22.50 - £60 (mine were £28.50). If you want the really cheap seats book well in advance, I had to book a month in advance for mine, but spending a little extra is worth it as the seats are not graduated very much in height so if you have a big-headed person in front of you, you will miss some of the action!
In Conclusion:
If you like Queen songs this is for you, If you like a bit of comedy this is for you. Basically this is for anyone. The send ups of todays musical society is brilliant, though some of the jokes you may not get if you don’t have at least a general knowledge of modern music and a passing familiarity with Queen.
Summary: Great Musical experience featuring the songs of Queen
