Advantages: intelligently written, well-acted,
Disadvantages: possibly not good for children or people who like 'spectacular musical entertainment extravaganzas!'
This is a great ghost story which is in quite a small atmospheric theatre. It is performed by two actors who, between them, play all the roles.
I was surprised by, firstly, how well this worked because I thought I would find it distracting, and also was surprised at how scarily atmospheric a play can be.
The storyline (very basically, wouldn't want to give too much away.. ) sounds quite standard, man goes to large old house in the deepest countryside. Weird things happen. Why do they happen? Well, that's the play. I would usually write more plot stuff, but really, it is better watched. It's not just me being lazy, I promise!
I thought without the effects of the cinema it would be hard to be honestly scared in the theatre, but I was when I saw this.. I'm not a 'horror film' person and I don't like scary films, but there were a few moments that really do surprise you. Also, (which is very important for me!), it wasn't scary in a 'how am I going to get to sleep tonight' kind of way', but more in a kind of 'wow... weird.. scary.. now I'm going to get the night bus home on my own' kind of way.
it is very intelligently written and well-acted, although I know that the cast is rotated quite frequently. It has the kind of effect which I hadn't felt since I was about 12 and exchanging scary ghost stories with my friends! I would definitely recommend it to people who enjoy straight plays in London.
It is a thoughtful play and it is usually not hard to get tickets, usually, they have them at the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square. The theatre is very 'cosy' but very well-suited to this.
