Advantages: Plenty of animals
Disadvantages: Safety, how the animals are treated
Is this te best zoo in the world? In a word NO.
However this is certainly the most intriguing zoo i have ever been to.
The complete lack of security and animal care that seemed to be in place was bewildering. For example the lions and tigers in a pit with only small barrier around them. Children were climbing over the barrier and dangling into the pit. This got me extremeley worried about the fact one slip could then lead to them getting eaten. It was deeply worrying. Because of this format, people were also throwing the animals food and rubbish into the animal pens. There were no signs or workers to discourage this. Also polar bears in the blistering sun with no apparent water source or way for them to cool off, they looked ill and distressed. Im not saying there was any animal cruelty; it just seemed to me that compared to other zoos they made little effort to make the animals enovironments neither safe nor conmforting for the animals. The only animal they seemed to make any efforts for were the pandas which were behind 6ft thick glass. They obviously cared about the well being of the pandas above all other animals with the precautions that people could get no where near them.
The best attaction of the Zoo was the aquarium which was excellant, with dolphins, seals, and all manor of fish. This was the only advanced, american like attraction there. The dolphin shows were well carried out and the tricks impressive.
So all in all a very different zoo to the ones im used to in England. Very different and probably worth a visit just to see the differene.
Summary: Different, very different

sunmeilan - 16/04/08 I lived in Beijing for 11 years, but only went to the zoo once, just after I arrived. I found it very depressing and the enclosures were far too small. That was nearly twenty years ago now though, so I hope it has improved a little...Unfortunately, it is pretty much the best of the zoos in China. |
