Advantages: a lovely place to visit
Disadvantages: none
Blue Planet aquarium is a great place to visit whilst the weather is so bad. It is a centre specialising in all things fishy which is both entertaining and educational. When you arrive you are given a whats on guide which gives you a rough guide to where everything is. You then begin your journey through the Northern Streams this section has tanks of pike, then through to the piranas (Tropical Rivers) and then through to Lakes and Ponds which is a section devoted to most lovely coloured frogs you have ever seen. These sections all have interactive sections for children and questions painted on the walls so they learn as they go through each exhibit. Each reptile or fish is in a tank which looks like it's natural habitat and all look happy and healthy. Downstairs is reached by lift or stairs and immediately you see crocodiles!!! Very large ones at that!! In this section is also sharks and some flat floating fish you are allowed to pet..kids love this. There is a breeding section here and a lab you can peer into. Then you come to a large theatre with a huge tank of sharks and tropical fish. You can leave any buggies for children here and go on a revolving walkway through the tank with the water all around you. They have feeding time every hour or so and divers wave at you through the glass! There is also a great cafe (not too expensive) and very very clean toilets. The gift shop is lovely but expensive ..although the items look good quality. The other thing that struck me is how friendly the people who work there are and how well thought out the place is, it has braille on the lift buttons and disabled toilets and easy access. Great for everybody interested in aquatics!
