WaterWorld Waterpark (Ayia Napa, Cyprus)
by lak11 If you are planning to holiday in Cyprus and stay anywhere within travelling distance of the resort of Ayia Napa then I would highly recommend that you visit the fantastic water park called Water world. On my last visit to Protaras my family and I decided to visit this water park. We went with friends we had made at the ... hotel. Altogether there were four over forties, four teenagers and a child of ten. We decided to travel by bus which was easy as a bus stop was close to our hotel. The water park is on the outskirts of Ayai Napa. It took us about thirty to forty minutes to get there. It is easy to travel by taxi orcar. If choosing to travel by taxi arrange the price first. We had already purchased our tickets from a travel kiosk in Protaras the day before, so were allowed straight through and didn't have to queue at all in the scorching heat. Tickets cost 32 Euros for an adult and 18 Euros for a child aged twelve and under. Once paid for this covers all rides. We hired two lockers between us and were given a key on a wrist band for this. Next we went to find sun loungers. Although it was now late morning there were still plenty of beds remaining and we found a nice spot by the lazy river, with beds for us all, and some much needed parasols. Then the fun began. AS for me and the other lady in our party, we weren't planning to go on many of the rides, but wished to watch the others having fun while we enjoyed the atmosphere. However, we did venture several times on the lazy river. We needed to do this to cool down from the intense heat of the Cyprus summer sun. I found the scariest thing about this river was the large blue dragon flies darting around the river. Other than that it was pleasant and relaxing. We all also ventured into the artificial beach and waited for the wave machine to be switched on. This was great fun for all. This seemed very popular with visitors to the park. I watched the adventurous members of our party having fun on the excellent rides at this park. This park is bigger than the one at Paphos', Aphrodite Park. Although large, once one has consulted the map in the leaflet given with the tickets, it soon becomes easy enough to find your way around. As the morning turned into afternoon the park became busier and the queues for rides grew but it never proved too long a wait for anything. The water park is based upon Greek gods and goddesses and Greek heroes with rides named after them. Some really are awesome, such as 'the fall of Icarus' where one feels as if you are sure to fall over the top of the flume. I'm sure it's safe but frightening. Other rides that our party enjoyed were: Aelos whirlpool, Minotaur's Labyrinth, Apollo's Plunge. This is a group/family raft ride where you twist and turn and suddenly drop as you journey through 124 metres on a fast moving raft. This is very popular. The kamikaze slides are not for the fainthearted. On the scariest y the ride you start of in an enclosed flume and then come out and fall down a sheer drop at speed. I am told it was amazing. There are various food outlets in the park such as Dionysos Temple which is self-service. Homer's Burger Palace sells fast food. Both outlets have vegetarian options. The food was quite nice. Seats and tables were easy enough to find. We had a great time here with everyone agreeing that the water world had provided us with a great and memorable day out. Read the complete review |

Aphrodite Water Park (Paphos, Cyprus)
by lak11 Before going on my recent holiday to Paphos, Cyprus, my family and I had decided that visiting the Aphrodite Water Park as a must. We thought that we would go a few days into our holiday when we had acclimatised a little, although this isn't easy in a country as hot as Cyprus. And sometimes while on a 'chill out' holiday it's hard to ... force oneself away from a comfortable sun lounger by the pool with ice cold drinks to hand but we knew we would all regret it if we didn't visit this attraction. We bought our tickets from travel/excursion agents in Coral Bay, near to our hotel. Prices seemed to be the same price, where ever purchased, whether buying from reps at the hotel or booking offices. Tickets can be bought on the day at the water park itself but we had been advised that this might entail some queuing and buying in advance would ensure quick entry. This was preferable to queuing in the hot sun. The tickets cost 29 Euros (about £24-£25) each. This covers all rides. There are offers such as two day passes and group reductions available. TRAVEL From where we were staying it was easy to travel to the water park as a bus stopping outside our hotel takes you right to the entrance. The park, on the outskirts of Paphos, is well served by buses and taxis. If you show your bus ticket at the water park entrance the fare will be deducted from your ticket, or if pre booked the cash returned. This was only 1.50 Euros but with a family this helps a little. ARRIVAL Once there we waited just a few minutes to enter. There were signs stating that you could not take any food or even bottled water into the park and warnings that if found you would be fined 10 Euros! I was going to be allowed in with my half bottle of water until the attendant noticed that another member of our party also had some water left in a bottle and she demanded that we both left our bottles at the entrance. She watched like a hawk while we surrendered the bottles. I then thought that I probably wouldn't like this place, but I was wrong. It was friendly once inside. We were all given wristbands which meant that we didn't need cash while at the park; every time one made a purchase the wristband was scanned and payment was made on leaving the water park. LOCKERS We had made sure to travel as lightly as possible on this day out but although we didn't have that many possessions, we used the locker facility for wallets, purses and a few valuables. The locker costs five Euros plus a five Euro refundable deposit which is credited to your bill (wristband) when the locker key is returned on exiting the park. RIDES This water park looked inviting. We arrived there at about eleven a.m. and easily found five sunbeds with parasols together. Towels were placed on the beds and the map we were given and began our adventure. Well, I'm not as brave as I used to be, and also because usually at water parks you can't wear shoes on rides, I tend to not bother. I can't walk barefoot and so it is very difficult to access rides. Two years before when visiting the Ayia Napa water park I was told that I had to remove shoes for all rides apart from the lazy river, so I was surprised when attendants/life guards here were happy to allow me to keep my Crocs on. Well that meant I had no excuses! Was I brave enough? I started off on the lazy river with my husband while the other three (aged 17, 20 and 22) ran off to enjoy the more adventurous rides. The lazy river was lovely so we went around twice. I then thought that it was time to send my husband off to have some fun while I watched them all from a safe place. They went on the kamikaze. My husband thought this really hurt his back and shoulder blades. I think for the middle aged these rides often can cause damage, hopefully only temporary. He preferred the free fall and went on that a few times. We then all spent some time in the wave machine pool, bobbing about in rubber rings. I had my doubts but felt it was about time my children saw me enter into the spirit of things so I went, biting nails, with them for the climb up the hill and to the start of the fast river, which runs into the lazy river. The five of us all squeezed into a family raft and down we went! It was great and I was glad I was brave! On the fast ride down it felt as if we would capsize, but it was a lovely feeling being splashed as we travelled under the scorching sun. Next I went with my husband on the fast river but in a double ring. This is scarier but still tremendous fun. On this you travel further and join the lazy river with a big splash-trouble is we got caught in the flow on joining the lazy river and capsized, much to my children's delight! I think the rest of my family went on everything at least once. Although August and the Cypriot children were on holiday from school the park wasn't too crowded. Queues were never too long or slow moving. FOOD OUTLETS The food seemed as if it would be expensive but on seeing the size of the portions it wasn't too bad. My husband chose a chicken donner kebab which cost about six Euros. Altogether we spent quite a lot on food but had we realised how big the portions were then we would have ordered less. The pizzas were large and filling and could have been shared by two. The food was quite tasty. There wasn't a great vegetarian option-but there were cheese and tomato pizzas and jacket potatoes with various fillings. We found staff very friendly and helpful in the food outlets (we also bought drinks from a kiosk). GIFT SHOP The gift shop was quite small and expensive. It would have been better if a greater variety of merchandise was offered. We didn't buy anything, which is unusual for my aughter, who is a sucker for a souvenir. PHOTO BOOTH Photos were taken as one went on rides around the water park. These were expensive. I seem to remember they cost six Euros but I'm not sure. TOILETS/CHANGING ROOMS The toilets weren't bad but weren't quite as clean towards the end of the day. There were enough of them. Only one of us used the changing rooms as the rest of us, having dried quickly in the hot sun, put our clothes on top of swim wear. The changing rooms were said to be adequate. OVERALL IMPRESSION I preferred the Aphrodite Water Park to the larger park at Ayia Napa. Although the Ayia Napa Park had more harrowing rides and was larger I found he atmosphere inside this park even friendlier than at Ayia Napa (which I still liked) and welcoming. As it was smaller, it was easier to find ones way around and therefore make the most of all rides. It was easy to find family members and join them on rides. It was a great day out and I would definitely recommend this water park to young and old. As for myself, I was pleased that I had been on more rides than my usual floating around the lazy river. My daughter remarked that she was very proud of her mum. Paphos Bird and Animal Park (Paphos, Cyprus)
by kingfisher111 My family and I have recently returned home from a week's holiday in Cyprus staying in the Paphos region. If you have read my review on Paphos itself you will know that I was not incredibly impressed with the area but we did have one lovely day visiting the Pafos Bird and Animal Park. The park is actually situated about 15 km ... from Paphos in the Coral Bay area. In order to reach it you need to drive inland a little and slightly up the mountain. This means that when you are at the park you do get lovely views of the sea and the bays. It's actually quite beautiful. Visiting in February meant that the park was hardly busy at all which meant we could stroll around at our leisure and I didn't have to worry too much about my daughters wondering off and losing sight of them. Also it's not a huge site and it's easy to wander around in a couple of hours taking your time to look at all of the creatures. The first thing that struck me is that the park is very well laid out and also very clean and tidy. There is one main path which takes you all the way round with a number of offshoots, but you get a very clear map that means that you don't miss out on anything. Even on a relatively small site there is a large number of birds and animals to see. There are more birds than animals. These are mostly caged and I couldn't wonder if some of these were a bit small but the birds do not seem to mind so much. There are lots of small birds such as parakeets, parrots, cockatiels, love birds, zebra finch to name just a few. By all the enclosures there were some fact sheets which were all in English and generally very helpful. I wasn't sure though whether some of the birds might have been moved because some of the fact sheets did not seem to be referring to the birds in the cages. Larger birds included a large group of flamingos which are always fascinating to see. There were also ostriches, rheas and emus in larger paddocks. My daughters loved seeing these and we were able to get some good close up views. There was also a bird show a couple of times a day. This takes place in a beautifully cool amphitheatre which must be bliss on a hot summer's day. Apparently it has air conditioning in Summer and heating in Winter. The show mainly consisted of a number of parrots trained to do various tricks like riding bikes and playing basketball! It was all very clever but there's a bit of me that always feels uncomfortable watching any creatures being made to perform tricks. My girls loved their antics though and thought they were very funny. At the end of the show some owls were brought in and it was wonderful to be able to see these at very close up. There are also a number of animals at the park. I think that the main attraction has to be two giraffes. They have quite a large paddock to wander in and my girls were very struck by their very tall house! Other animals include zebra, camels, giant tortoises (who we never saw move at all!), eland, cows and sheep. There is also a small petting areas for children to get up close to lambs, baby goats and rabbits. This is not very large though and I can imagine on a busy summer's day this are would get packed There are very close facilities and reminders for the children to wash their hands as well. One of our favourite areas was the reptile house where we saw a number of different snakes and reptiles which we could look at very closely through glass panels. When we went in we were the only ones so we had very good views and we were really able to take in these magnificent creatures at our leisure. The park also has quite a large restaurant. They had quite a good range on the menu varying from some quite traditional cypriot fare to all of the usual options with chips! Everything was quite resonably priced and quite tasty as well. Another area of the park which was a big hit with our daughters was the children's playground. This was very good with lots of climbing frames, slides, roundabouts and see saws. The girls had a lot of fun here and there were also some benches for us to sit on which was very welcome. There are also a couple of souvenir shops but as we did not go in I cannot comment on these. There were also ample number of toilets and these were well placed around the park which was very useful with a two year old who is not without the odd 'accident'. These were all very clean but obviously they weren't coping with large volumes of people at this time! It is not too expensive to visit the park with entrance fees for adults at 15.50 euros and for children 8.50 euros. Also there are free transfers from all of the local hotels which is really useful. You have to book this in advance and are normally picked up in time to arrive at the park by about 10.30. You ae given about four hours to explore the park (which I think is about the optimum time) before being picked up to return to your hotel. In the winter season the park is open from nine until five but in the summer it is open until sunset. It was an enjoyable half day spent looking at all the animals and I would recommend the trip. It's also good to note that the park is committed to the breeding and conservation of birds, animals and plantlife in Cyprus. I also noticed from the literature that we picked up that there will soon be lemurs, meercats, an aquarium and a sesl show so it is obviously an attraction that is still expanding. If you visit the Bird Park in Cyprus I hope that you will enjoy it as much as we did nd also I hope that you will find this review useful. Read the complete review |
