Advantages: Great for families

Disadvantages: Weather can be disappointing

DUINRELL is a superb family holiday resort, situated on the coast of Holland, north of Rotterdam.

The resort consists of a theme park set in beautiful countryside with shops, restaurants and accommodation.

There are three types of accommodation available. The Duinhostel, especially suited to groups and large families, camping and Duingalows (very nice chalets).

Free admission to the vast amusement park is included in the price as well as free admission to the Tiki Pool between certain hours.

The amusement park does not have the latest state-of-the-art white-knuckle rides. It has a more relaxed feel and my three children (all aged under 10) couldn't get enough of it! There are some gentle roller coasters, and a boat that plunges into water from a great height. Although everything is free in the amusement park there are a few coin-operated amusement machines, but with so much free stuff to do, our kids showed very little interest in them.

The Tiki Pool is superb, with plenty of flumes, a Lazy River, hot whirlpools etc. and is certainly a good option for a rainy day.

I have visited Duinrell on two separate occasions, camping each time. The first time was with Euro Camp, the second with Euro Sites. There is little to choose between the two companies. The tents that they use are identical, just different colours. I think that Euro Sites is slightly cheaper.

The nearest town is Wasanaar, which is a 10-minute walk from the camp. It is a fairly affluent Dutch town and is the home of several Dutch TV celebrities. The shops tend to be a little up-market (the hand-made chocolate shop is well worth a visit), but there is a small supermarket and various cash machines.

From Wasanaar it is possible to catch busses to various towns including Rotterdam and Leiden. Remember to buy tickets in advance from the Post Office (it saves money). Also remember to queue for a bus the Dutch way. It is not necessary to m
ake a mental note of all the people who were at the bus stop before you, or who arrived after you. You do not have to stand in any particular order. It does not matter if the last person to arrive at the bus stop gets on the bus first.

Overall I would recommend a week at Duinrell for any family with children in the 6-11 age range.
