Advantages: Great drinking opportunity, You will get drunk
Disadvantages: Wont be a 7AM start next morning, You will get drunk
Ever thought about drinking your way around the world? Well you could do it the traditional way but it would cost you a bob or two in airfares. So why not give the EPCOT centre a go – conveniently located in family holiday heaven, Disney World, Florida. Just in case you don’t know what EPCOT is, here is really quick recap. EPCOT (or Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow) is actually part of the Disney World theme park. EPCOT is broken into two parts – Future World (which we have no interest in this review) and the World Showcase (which is very important to this review). The World Showcase, located on the world showcase lagoon, is bordered by 10 countries (but smaller versions of course) containing rides, shops, restaurants etc. themed to that country. And this is where the fun comes in - as it happens each country pretty much offers a drinking possibility. Before you start your drinking however here are a couple of guidelines. Firstly visit the shop (traders) at the beginning. Here you can buy an EPCOT passport. This is your proof that you have completed the ‘session’ – get it signed or something at each stop. Next get your map and make a note of toilets – you don’t want to get caught short between countries, there isn’t a toilet at each one. And finally this trip is not best done on a red-hot day – best to wait for a night. Oh yes and don’t get leery or ladish – Disney security is good – very good. Your first port of call should of course be the United Kingdom and more specifically the Rose and Crown pub. Here you can enjoy a pint of any of the following – Bass, Caffreys, Harp, Tennants and Guinness. Not only that they put up the football (soccer) results on a Sunday! On leaving the Rose and Crown your next port of call is France. Don’t worry that you will have to drink Wine in France – beer is available at the Boulange
rie Patisserie. If you are not a beer drinker though there is of course plenty of wine available. Next a taste of the exotic. When you reach Morocco you want to be heading for the Tangierine Café. I have to be honest here and say I missed Morocco out as I couldn’t find anywhere selling beer. Apparently you can buy beer at this café – maybe someone could confirm this. Your next stop, and you certainly shouldn’t be flagging yet as there is a long way to go, is the land of the rising sun – Japan. If memory serves me well, and it might not have done, the place to be in Japan is the Yakitori House. Here not only can you have a Kirin Beer (or a sake for the non beer drinkers) but also a really good beef curry! As you reach America you are at the half way point of the lake, if not the world. Here you will find the Liberty Inn which isn’t actually an Inn but a counter service take away selling cheeseburgers, and more importantly, Samuel Adams (recommended) and Budweiser. Sit outside here and admire the scenery while you recharge your batteries for the final assault on the final leg ‘home’. I have to confess I have no information on Italy to hand. I did get a beer there and I will find out which one it was. It was bought from an outside counter selling beer but I cannot confirm its name. Will come back to this one when I find out. You have a couple of choices when you arrive in Germany. Your first option is to buy a Becks at the Sommerfest counter. What I would advise you to do however is pre-book into the Biergarten which has an all you can eat Oktoberfest. It wont be quick and you will have more than one beer but its probably worth the extra effort. I believe it runs from 4 to 8:30 on an evening. As you roll into China you may be just about on your last legs – especially if you did the optional Oktoberfest. Your stop here is the Lotus Blossom. Here you can buy Chinese
beer – Tsingato I think but I will check this also. Norway is a sight for sore eyes. Visually it’s especially good for the girls who work there – as with all the pavilions in EPCOT a lot are from the native country. Take it from me they look just as good without the beer goggles. Anyway in Norway you should head to the Kringla Bakeri. Here you will be able to knock back a Ringnes beer safe in the knowledge you would have paid a lot more for it in Norway itself. Wine is also available. If you are feeling a bit hungry by now – I was hungry at every country by now – delightful open-faced sandwiches are also available. Well you have made it – one drink to go. Welcome to Mexico! Your final stop is the Cantina de San Angel. Here you can indulge in Dos Equis beer (XX) or if you really want to push the boat out, a frozen margarita. Stamp your passport you have officially drunk your way around the world. If this was not enough for you then the best time to visit EPCOT is during the Food and Wine festival, which I think is in September. During this time there are stalls from even more countries some selling beer! And finally my Lonely Planet style reminder - remember good places go bad and bad places go good so don’t just stick to the review.
