Advantages: Small, Charming

Disadvantages: I could be wrong but this park might be closed permanently now

River Country is the original Disney water park (built way back in 1976, before Wet n Wild was built!) and was originally just planned to be a section of Fort Wilderness on the edge of Bay Lake (near the Magic Kingdom). Once the other water parks started popping up in Orlando then it was decided to make River Country a park in its own right, which then spawned both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. In River Country you will be mostly swimming on lake water with a sandy bottom, (which is kept very clean and critter-free) as this park is an old fashioned "water hole" just like the ones that Tom Sawyer played in.

This being the smallest of the water parks it is also the cheapest and will not really take a whole day like Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. This park is a good choice for families with young kids as the rides aren’t as thrilling as those on the other parks, but it still a fun park with swing ropes, bridges and even an inner tube ride called White Water Rapids.

The advantage of this park is that there are hardly any queues or crowds so this is the ideal spot for a half-day relax so that you can recharge your batteries and be ready for another fun-filled day.

The one disadvantage is that, due to its low capacity, River Country doesn’t stay open for very long during the year, only a few months during the summer season. In fact, I think that this park is now closed permanently so it would be wise to check before you make a trip that it is open for guests. If it has been closed it will be a shame because River Country is a charming water hole filled with low-tech fun for the whole family.

It was open when we were there in June, although quite difficult to find - I hadn't realised that we had to go through Fort Widerness!
