Advantages: Great transport, great animals, great environments
Disadvantages: can get crowded in the summer
I visited San Diego zoo this summer and I must say It is in my opinion the best zoo I have been to, maybe the best zoo in the world.
For starters its massive, but don't let that put you off as the zoo has its own internal transport system. This incudes a cable car, which you must pay for (a couple of dollars) from one end to the other of the zoo. I would strongly advise this for at least a one way trip. It takes you high right over the centre of the zoo from which you get an excellant view of the animals and their environment from above
The other transport which is free is a guiding bus tour around the zoo. I would strongly recommend getting on the top floor of the double decker bus for a better view. This bus is not only a quick way to get round the zoo but also there is guide on board who points out the areas of interest and gives intersting facts about the animals you can see.
The zoo transport system is simply excellant, with constant cable cars and buses every few minutes. Also this transport does not at all ruin it for those who walk round the zoo as the routes for pedestrians and the buses are different. Not everything can be viewed from the bus, so if you want to see everything you must walk a bit.
Some of the walking areas are above ground level on high walkways through trees and various animal territories, which also provide excellant views. The methods round the zoo are all varied and provide a different experiance and view each way and would strongly recommend them all. You could easily spend a whole day here exploring, or you could do it in a couple of hours using the buses, it depends how much of an in depth experiance you want. This makes this zoo excellant for all ages as those who are elderly or have young children can still see the whole zoo without getting tired and can view it all while sat down. Or for those who are fit truly can see it all while walking.
The animals in the zoo are all you expect as well as some rare species which add to the experiance. Some of the more suprising additions I found were: Hippos, polar bears and the best of all were the panda dens. I have been to Beijing zoo and seen pandas there but this was a much better experience. As you can literally get a couple of feet away from the pandas, and because they are not a dangerous animal only a small fence is between you and them. San Diego is known as maybe the best Panda breeding zoo outside China, and when i was there i was lucky enough to see a week old panda cub which was born in there. Amazing, especially the proximity in which you can get to these amazing animals.
All in all an amazing zoo and if your on the west coast it is a must see.
