Advantages: Best rides, accessable location
Disadvantages: Can get very busy, therefore queues!
I visited this theme park last October 2007 around Halloween time, being a theme park fan i had to experience it as all my American friends raved about it constantly. You know how they say most things in America are bigger and better? well it's definitely true in this case.
Six flags over Texas is found in Arlington, TX 76010 which is a town between the cities of Dallas and Fort worth, actually all three are joined and the locals call the whole urban area the 'metroplex' for convenience. The park was created in 1961 and was the first 'Six Flags' (it's a franchise now all over America).
We went by car from Dallas exiting interstate 30(motorway), leaving our car in the vast car park, from which you can see the tallest ride, 'the titan' it really whets your appetite and i couldn't wait to get in.
It costs $49.99 (about £28) for a day for all rides(Adult) Child Admission Under 48" $29.99(£18) you can buy in advance online which is cheaper at $29.99 Adult. Anyway when we queue up for our tickets at the entrance the teller was so interested in trying to upgrade to a season pass she forget to sell me my ticket and i had to go back to get it (not a great start).
As with most major parks now this one is in sections each with a different geographical or film theme, they are 'Mexico and Spain' 'Texas' 'looney tunes USA' 'boomtown' 'Old south' and 'Gotham City'. Being adrenalin junkie's my friend and i made a beeline for the big rides. There are 45 rides in total with varying levels of intensity. The first ride we went on was the 'Texas Giant' which is a massive wooden roller coaster, built in 1990. We waited about 10 minutes in the queue, and the first drop really did get the blood pumping, although quite noisy i would say its the best wooden coaster Ive been on better than 'The grand national' in Blackpool in my opinion.
Next up was the biggie 'The titan' , this was a red coloured steel coaster and could be seen from miles around, it is 255 ft tall and reaches up 85 mph on the drops, in fact the first was so high and fast it dried my contact lenses out! It scared the daylights out of me, not happened since i rode 'corkscrew' as a 12 year old!
There are tons of rides and attractions at the park e.g. usual log flume, exhibits about Texas history and cowboy stuff, but its the rides i went there for, although we did experience a few in the afternoon it did seem to get really crowded and the queue waiting times went from 10 mins to 30 mins so we didnt have time to go on 'Batman' or 'Mr freeze' the other two major rides.
I would recommend going up the tower to get a fantastic view of the park and Texas stadium home of the baseball team (Texas rangers). Being Halloween time there were lots of decorations in the theme and lots of park staff dressed up as ghouls and ghosts, it created a really good atmosphere and being end of October it wasn't too hot or cold, just the right temperature, a sunny 21 degrees centigrade.
There's tons of enjoyment to be had for young and old here, with live shows, eateries, live exhibits like glass making and of course the thrills of the rides. Its not as nicely spaced out as Alton Towers but the quality of the entertainments make up for that, plus it much more accessible to get to than Alton towers is.
This place is an absolute must for anybody holidaying in the Dallas or Fort Worth area, heart-beating thrills are guaranteed. By the way if you are wondering about the name, the 'six flags' refer to the flags of Texas, Spain, Mexico, Confederate states of America , the stars and stripes and France which have all flown over Texas at some point in its history.
This is an adrenalin junkie's paradise.
Summary: A terrific day out
