Advantages: Relaxing family fun day out
Disadvantages: None
What a great time we had at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon. After three exhausting days walking around the other Disney attractions, our day here came as a welcome relief. This was the first day that we actually felt we were on holiday! OVERVIEW Let me set the scene. The park centres around the Typhoon Lagoon surf pool, at the head of which is a "volcanic mountain", with a boat impaled precariously on its peak. The story goes that this boat became lodged after "The Great Storm" and to this day, the mountain tries vainly to dislodge it with an enormous geyser of water every half hour. This "explosion" can be heard throughout the park shortly followed by the screams of swimmers as huge waves erupt in the surf pool. Of course, it is recommended that only the strongest swimmers use the pool at this time and an announcement is made to that effect beforehand. Aside from this half hourly event, the sound system continuously churns out "Surfin' USA" by The Beach Boys - there is no escape! The waves from the surf pool lap onto a gorgeous sandy beach. Arrive early to grab sunbeds in a decent spot. THE RIDES As many of the walkways leading to rides are made from wooden planks I would recommend that swimshoes are worn. (These are also good for protecting the soles of your feet from the blistering heat). Castaway Creek is a continuous flowing river that circles the entire park. This is a relaxing tube ride suitable for all ages with several entrance/exit points along its length. It is for this reason that I would recommend you take note of any landmarks before joining this ride to avoid mistakenly disembarking at the wrong place. Ketchakiddee Creek is a safe area, separate from the surf pool which consists of slides, raft rides and bubbling jets for the little ones. At the edge of the main surf pool itself are some body slides for children, although be careful here as t
he waves can sometimes knock the little ones off their feet. Keelhaul Falls and Mayday Falls are interwoven one-man raft rides, ideal for the less adventurous rider. Gang Plank Falls is a family raft ride. A gentle ride but beware the cold showers! Humunga Kowabunga - three triple speed slides (enclosed tubes). For the more daring. Storm Slides - three body slides - fast and fun. Shark Reef is a salt water pool for those who wish to snorkel with the sharks and other marine life. FACILITIES * Life guards - Typhoon Lagoon seems to be a very safety conscious environment. * Lockers and towel rentals. * Life vests for children - these are provided free of charge. Guests must leave a refundable deposit or hotel room key. * Dressing rooms. * Shark Reef Dive Shop. * Various snack bars - I would recommend that you buy a refill drink cup. This means you pay only once, can refill the cup as many times as you like and your drink is always ice cold. We shared one between the family and saved a fortune! The Typhoon Lagoon refill cup also makes a great souvenir to take home. FINALLY We are returning to Orlando next year and as we enjoyed ourselves so much last time, my daughter has asked to spend her 6th birthday at Typhoon Lagoon. Now that's a recommendation in itself!
