Alton Towers (Staffordshire)
Advantages: Also suitable for those who don't like fast rides
Disadvantages: Needs a decent restaurant
We visited Alton Towers several times this year, as we are fortunate enough to have family who live nearby, and we have Madame Tussards passes.
This is a great day out for all the family. We are not ones for scary rides, but this still provides a fabulous day out. The childrens rides, still provide a great day out for adults, although it helps when you have a young child with you as an excuse. These include the nutty squirrel ride, or if you're feeling adventurous, a mini roller coaster. The scariest for us is the log flume, which is only recommended on warm days, as no matter where you sit you get soaked.
The main thing that people complain about with Alton Towers is the queues. However for the sort of rides that we go on, I do not think these are an issue. The only one that feels that you spend a long time in a queue for is the Charlie and the Chocolate factory ride, which is always very popular. Personally I do not really think that this one is worth the wait. I've never really had to queue for the log flume.
Normally, I used to associate Alton Towers with lots of fast and scary rides. Obviously these are available, including Nemisis, Rita and Oblivion. The queues for these always look to be really long, and I don't envy people waiting in these.
One thing I would criticise is there is not a wide variety of choice in terms of places to eat. We are quite strict on what we allow our daughter, and there isn't really anywhere to sit down for "proper" food. There are all of the usual fast food type places, but I do prefer to take a packed picnic lunch. The problem with this is that you then have to carry it around. Considering it is trying to appeal to families, I think it would be a perfect day out if they introduced one better restaurant.
My only other criticism is having to pay £5 for parking. I do think that this is a little steep, and you have no choice but to park there.
Overall I feel that this is a great day out for all of the family, even if you are a family that don't like scary rides.
Summary: A good day out
