Advantages: frightening, entertaining, fun
Disadvantages: long queues, short ride
This review relates to the recently unveiled ride 'Th13teen' (previously known as Secret Weapon 6) in the Dark Forest section of Alton Towers theme park.
When I visited a couple of days ago, I fully expected the queue to be a long one. At 45 minutes, it wasn't a bad wait, but this was a day where it was pouring with rain and the schools had not broken up yet for Easter. I would not expect a queue of less than an hour if going in the summer, as this ride has been hyped up so much! Having said this, some effort was made with queue entertainment as a very frightening 'ghostly' figure in a long cloak had been paid to wander up and down the queue, spooking people! This provided a few laughs, and helped to pass the time. Similarly, the queue winds around speakers playing eerie music and 'crashed' vehicles, which provide something to take your mind off the wait.
An eerie female voice speaking 'if you go down to the woods today...' at intervals from speakers near the ground are enough to make you jump occasionally! An excited, scary atmosphere surrounded the people in the queue, and this was amplified when the queue eventually reached an almost pitch black area with chalk on the walls and eerie plant growth. (Be warned - there are some steep stone steps in this section, and you cannot see where you are going!)
I had deliberately avoided finding out the 'surprise' relating to the ride before I went on it - and I'm glad. Initially, it is a rollercoaster through the woods - fast, fun and enjoyable. The twist to the tale begins when the rollercoaster suddenly enters a building - and the dark. Expect a few seconds of confusion, before a couple of things happen that you probably weren't expecting!
This is generally a very enjoyable rollercoaster, especially if you don't know what happens - but I wouldn't expect the format of the ride to stay secret for long as more and more people experience it. It isn't a very long rollercoaster, but then it is only designed to scare you - and it does! Well worth the queue, in my opinion.
