Advantages: fun fun fun, cheap (ish), big
Disadvantages: big!, none, none
This year we needed (not wanted) a cheap holiday with the 2 boys (aged 9 and 12) so decided to put our Tussaud Group season tickets to good use and visit Alton Towers. Approximately 5 hours later, we arrived at our caravan site and then proceeded to spend 3 days of the week at the park. When you arrive (early arrival recommended) the car park is vast. You then can catch a monorail into the park from there (which makes it seem very American). As the monorail travels through the park to its entrance, you can see a host of rollercoasters and rides. We got in early with our tickets and went straight to Air (the newest ride there where you feel like you are flying ? a lie-down-forward roller coaster). We then went on Nemesis (gut-churning but good fun) which is also a roller coaster. The park is set into different areas, all of which are a long walk apart. However, there is a very good skyline ride that takes you to the different parts of the park. The overall ?feeling? of the park is great ? open, fun, and value for money. Roller-coasters-a-plenty, there are also lots of rides for the feint hearted (eg water rides and 3d cinema to name but a few). The entry is somewhere around £20 per person but is well worth it. There is also the historic side of Alton, once a great manor house. From ghosts to castle ruins it has everything. It beats Chessington and Thorpe Park any day ? but, as it is a long way from us, we are ?stuck? with its lesser counterparts. My kids enjoyed this holiday as much as Florida. The only downside is that, apart from the park itself, other local places to visit seem boring in comparison!

- 16/10/03 It's a nice place, but I hate white knuckle rides, so my husband gets bored queing on his own. |

- 10/10/03 You were lucky to avoid the queues, there is nothing worse than high entrance fees and then wasting hours hanging around. |
