Advantages: Best in the country

Disadvantages: Not the best in the world

Alton Towers is in my opinion the only British Theme Park worth visiting. I've been to the three main ones in Britain, Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and Alton Towers and the other two are not as good. Alton Towers is larger, cleaner, with bigger, faster and more exciting rides (for a start, it actually has rollercoasters which the others do not - they only have rides which are baby ones) and the food is equally good.

For about £20 it's not bad for a day out with stacks of good rides, amusements around the park and good food. However, if you've never visited and you've been to American Theme Parks you'll be slightly disapointed because it's not on the same scale as, say, Disney World etc. But, as far as British parks go it is the best. The only thing that I rate more highly in the others is the fact that I prefer the food at Chessington.

It's a very good day out for people of all ages, whereas the other two are more tailored towards a younger age group - something which they are trying to rectify. Something else to bear in mind about Alton Towers is that it does have a big hotel which is apparently very good (I haven't actually stayed there) so you can stay in the area and do other stuff - a nice weekend break maybe.
