Undoubtedly one of the best Zoological Gardens in the United Kingdom, Bristol Zoo is at the forefront of Conservation and Zoological research. Located in Clifton, easy to get to and well signposted from the M4.
One of the best things about Bristol Zoo is the fabuolous Reptile House where are number of rare species including west African Dwarf Crocodiles and Rhino Iguanas are involved in captive breeding programmes. The animals are all housed in large glass naturalistic terraria, which have mini microhabitats and it's interesting to first see a little desert, followed by a little rainforest and really allows you to appreciate the diversity of the planets reptile and amphibian life.
The Zoo also has an impressive bird collection and the Wallace Aviary is especially good, it allows visitors to actually enter and get close to the birds, which are both flying and ground dwelling. They have some beautiful members of the Pigeon family in the aviary, such as the bright bleeding heart doves.
One of my favourite exhibits is Gorilla Island, where visitors can get up close and personal with a mammal that shows a striking resemblance to ourselves.
Overall Bristol Zoo is definately worth a visit, the animals are well cared for and lead enriching lives and the Zoo is very visitor friendly.
