I'm here at least once every 2 months because I use it as a valuable resource for my textile research at college (not that I'm skinning the animals and taking them back to my studio!). I am given the chance to see some magnificent creatures in very close proximity and this is very important to me as I take a lot of my inspiration from the patterns, shapes and colous of the plumage, skins and furs of animals and birds.
There is a regular safari bus service which takes you up to the top of the park, where you can catch great views on a sunny day and it is easier to walk down from.
I would recommend a visit to see the two pairs of red pandas and their regular babies in their enclosures as they are super-cute and a definite hit with kids. Other attractions include 'The Penguin Parade' almost every lunchtime in the summer and the 'Touchy Feely' sessions in the education centre which only cost about £2 and give adults and kids the chance to hold doves, snakes, reptiles, spiders, snails and some fluffy things too!
The variety of animals is wide and it would take an afternoon, at least, to get round the whole lot, especially with all the special events running year-round.
This place used to be very depressing, with ill looking animals all over the grounds. I'll admit that it had improved greatly over the past decade, but the sight of some of the disturbed looking big cats, caged in tiny enclosures just breaks my heart. I'm not entirely sure how I feel yet about the whole 'endangered species being given an important chance to breed' argument, but I am glad that they are making some gradual attempt to improve their surroundings.
I'd say that this is a must for any visiting family to Edinburgh as it fills a day, isn't too expensive and there are plenty of places to catch a seat while the kids run loose!
