Advantages: Location, rides, facilities
Disadvantages: Can be expensive if you don't plan it (£35pp walk-up adult price!)
I think Thorpe Park is a must-see place if you're in the London or Surrey area. Here's why:
You can get there from Staines station in a taxi or shuttle bus. And Staines is on the Waterloo-route, or you can change at Clapham Junction if you need to take another train (e.g.a Victoria-route or London Overground). Or you can drive and there's lots of parking but I'm not sure if you have to pay for this.
It can be good value. Every summer I have known there have been 2-4-1 deals, this year it was with Walkers crisps. So you pay £35 (price for 2009, it changes every year) for 2 people. Or there's money off vouchers on backs of tickets, or you can get a bounce-back (where you visit and then when you're inside go to customer services, pay £10 and you can come back before end of season). Or now you can get a season-ticket just for Thorpe Park, good if you never go to the other attractions such as London Eye. I think it's £68 for the season - so just use it twice and you save £2. Also there are family tickets and child discounts, if a child is under 1 metre they go free (although they can't go on many rides).
There are lots of places to eat. Including fairly cheap places like KFC and Burger King or Caffe Nero. Nothing's stopping you bringing your own food but not many people would want to do this in summer. Just bring your own drinks to save paying £1 something for a bottle of water.
It's got cleaner. When I went 2 summer's ago the toilets weren't that nice, there was chewing gum everywhere and the park just had a dirty feel to it.
You will never be bored. A new ride opens every year, and the old rides don't get boring unless you go too often. If it's your first time you will be pushing it to fit everything in unless you go outside of school holidays and weekends!
Summary: Plan it so you don't spend your day in a queue
