Advantages: Small, portable and user friendly
Disadvantages: Expensive toners
I always think one of the biggest disadvantages of digital photography is that you don't end up with so many printed photographs. I have 1000s of photos stored on my PC and I do occasionally upload a batch to a site like Photobox and get them printed off, but I find that it takes a bit of time and effort to do that. So, I was delighted when my husband bought me the Canon Selphy CP760 Printer for Christmas. Finally I could print the photos I wanted, when I wanted them - a big thing for me as I'm very into scrapbooking and wanted to be able to create my pages when I wanted them, rather than having to order my photos and wait for them to arrive.
The Printer
The Canon Selphy CP760 is a compact photo printer. It is genuinely tiny and takes up hardly any space - at just 7.3cm high, 18cm wide, 12.7cm deep and weighing a very light 0.9kg. It is compatible with both PC and Mac computers. It supports most standard memory cards, and can also be connected to your computer in the same way as a normal printer. The printer comes with a feed tray which takes a small stack of 4 x 6" photo papers and can be removed for easy storage. It has a memory card reader, a 2.5cm wide preview screen which is big enough to look at what you are printing from the memory card, and a software disk to enable you to install the supporting programmes on to your PC / Mac.
Printing Your Photos
There are two ways of printing photos from the Canon Selphy CP760. The quickest and easiest way is to print directly from your memory card - instant photo prints! You literally just need to plug in the printer, turn it on, insert your memory card, select the photo you want to print from the preview pane and press print - you then get a good quality, glossy photo which looks like it has been printed professionally. I think this is a great as even technophobes should be able to manage this. Alternatively, you can print photos directly from your computer using the ULead Photo Express software which comes with the printer. This is also user-friendly and provides a good range of photo editing tools to enhance your photographs, such as red eye removal, sharpening up the colours, cropping, re-sizing etc. You can also create special effects such as mosaic tiling, sepia prints, adding text etc. In addition to this, you can use the software to create cards from your photographs - there are a range of backgrounds / borders providing to make Christmas cards, thank you notes and other greeting cards.
Toners / Paper
As with all photo printers, the one major disadvantage is the cost of running it. I have got a pack containing three ink cartridges and 108 sheets of photo paper, which should be enough to print 108 prints. This costs approx. £25 although it is worth shopping around as prices vary. At about 25p per photo it's not the most cost-efficient way of printing your photos, so I think I will still upload big sets and send them off to save money - it's great for printing a few pictures at a time though.
Price
The printer is available at various retailers for prices ranging from £75 to £95. It is obviously best to shop around for the best deal as the prices vary so much.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic printer and I would definitely recommend it. For serious photographers, there is probably a better product on the market but for somebody like me who just likes to have a bit of fun taking photos, and wants the instant gratification of seeing a proper print as fast as possible, I think it is perfect.
