Argos Cookworks 2 Slice
by k444tmc Last month I had been off work due to suffering disk damage in my lower back and sitting around at home was finding myself struggling for something that I fancied eating due to the sheer amounts of pain I was in! Sitting in pain one day I suddenly thought to myself that I fancied a toastie... then it hit me how much I liked them and how ... I hadnt got round to buying a toastie maker when I moved into my own home last year... so a quick look through the argos catalogue on my phone I soon reserved the cheapest one in there (I was at the end of my pay month after all!) and arranged for it to be picked up. The sandwich toaster comes packaged in a narrow square cardboard box with the image of the sandwich toaster on the front decorated in blue colours in the background. It also tells you this is from the Argos Cookworks range and is a 2 slice sandwich toaster. Down the sides of the box you are advised the toasting plates are non stick coated, the device is thermostatically controlled and that there is a pilot light. Upon opening the box the sandwich toaster is protected between two mouldings made out of polystyrene and when I took the toaster out I seen that there was no damage caused between transit or in store. The device itself is quite straight forward to use in the sense that there is no settings to play around with like some of the more expensive ones but its one you need to keep your eye on because of this. Inside there is an instruction book which gives you more information on use and highlighted on the front is the warning never to leave unattended due to the lack of settings. The cable and plug is around 1m long so you need to find a space for this near a socket. In terms of appearance it doesn't look cheap and horrible like a lot of other basic products you see from the likes of Argos - and its mainly black in colour and partially silver in an oval shape on the top displaying the range name over the top. To place your sandwichs inside you simply open by the handle and lift up - on the handle there is a clip to fasten to the bottom to keep the plates as close together for better toasting. The inside plates are coated in black and indented to hold the shakes of your sandwichs inside with curving to toast each sandwich in two diagnol halves. On the top of the toaster sure enough there is a light and when the toaster is plugged into the wall it lights up red whilst its warming up and changes to green to signal its ready for you to place the sandwichs inside. As per instructions before placing in the sandwichs you are advised to grease up the insides to stop the bread and fillings sticking. For this you can use cooking oil or butter. I, personally always smear some butter on to a kitchen roll and rub all over the plates. One thing I will note is the two seperate sandwich plates are quite small and you do need to cut all the crusts off to get a sandwich to reasonably fit in. I usually use medium bread and I can't even close the lid properly doing this, so thin bread would be the best thing to use with this device and I wouldnt recommend thick bread no matter what the instructions tell you. My first experiance trying this out ended up with a rubbish soggy looking toastie and I instantly thought what a mistake in buying this but then as I got more experiance using this I found I needed to leave it in the device longer than what the instructions were advising. The booklet tells you 2-3 minutes is suffient but I was finding it was taking a good 5-10 minutes to get a nice crispy toastie otherwise the toastie will become soggy and rip. As time went on, I have been finding on every occasion that some parts of the sandwich are not being toasted as well as other parts meaning I have to open the toaster up half way through and turn it upside down to another position so that it starts cooking the other parts it missed. Another issue for me would be no matter how careful you are with little fillings you are putting inside to avoid an angry mess, the fillings always spill out over the side (in my case, cheese) and due to the design the fillings will get stuck in the hideaway bits and can be very difficult to clean. You are almost afraid to clean it thinking you will scrape off the non stick coating but the best tool for me has been a toothbrush which I use for cleaning. I have heard no noise from this device ever apart from the first couple of times of use I detected a crackling noise which worried me at first but the instructions tell you this is completely normal. I have had this over a month now and has not let me down in terms of reliability and the scratch resistant coating is still there regardless of how many times we have had use out of it recently! ********** In all its a great little bargain if you ever found yourself in a position like I was where you just wanted a toasted sandwich at a decent price... However I fear this purchase will soon be getting stashed away, back in its box and pushed to the back of a cupboard for years to come. The reason being, as much as I enjoy toasties I feel quite limited to what I can do with this product in the sense that you can only have suitable sized sandwichs due to its lack of space inside and I believe a panini maker would have better use in my household. As previously noted its horrendous to clean and my cleaning toothbrush has definetely seen better days! Taking into account this is supposed to be a bargain product I think the designers should of allowed more space inside the toastie maker to allow for overspills inside so it will not end up melting over the sides and making a big mess of my kitchen counter! ... and the fact that it doesn't toast evenly really gets to me as its so hard trying to flip a scorching hot toastie on the device to the other side... For the likes of my household and similar (mine consists of me and my daughter) this is a decent size toastie maker but for larger families there are bigger ones which will meet the demand more... however for the above reasons I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but am giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because its not completely useless. ********** This is currently available in Argos for £9.89 Read the complete review |

Cookworks Stainless Steel 4 Slice Long Toaster
by Beccky When we moved house a few years ago we had to buy appliances on a budget, but still wanted them to look nice enough. We bought a Cookworks stainless steel kettle from Argos, and decided to buy the matching toaster. We paid £15 for it, although since then it has been updated slightly and now costs £20 (but is currently on offer at ... £16.99). The toaster came in a standard cardboard box, easy to fold down and put in the recycling. The toaster has a black central belt, with stainless steel panels on both sides. It looks smart, model and tidy. Granted, it's not a designer style toaster but I think it looks a little more expensive than it was. The toaster has a 70cm power cord which can be wound underneath eh toaster for safe keeping if you don't need that much length. My toaster is near to a socket anyway, but an extension cable is something you might need to consider if you're kitchen doesn't have sockets where you would like your toaster. The toaster has a knob and three buttons on the side. The knob allows you to pick the level of browning you would like - from 1-6. The three button are to cancel, defrost or reheat. There is a plastic lever on the same side as the buttons and knob which allows you to push down the bread once you have placed it into the toaster. As this is a 4 slice toaster it has two wide slots for your bread. This is very handy because it means that you can toast very large slices of bread, or longer items such as sliced baguettes without having to try and fit them into a small slot that a 2 slice toaster may have. I have also used 'toastie bags' successfully in this toaster which was a bonus as I think they are too wide for some toasters. There is no way to use one side of the toaster, so if you're only doing 2 slices of bread in one slot the other slot will also heat up. It would be helpful, from a power-saving point of view, to be able to operate each slot separately, however I don't expect functions like that from a £15 toaster. I like my toast slightly browned and find that between 2 and 3 is the perfect setting for this. One problem I have encountered with this toaster is that if you use it in quick succession after it's already been on, it remains hot and therefore cooks your toast much quicker meaning that if it's left on the same setting it can come out much darker than it normally would. So if you intent to make more than 4 slices of toast straight after each other then I would turn the setting down to prevent burning. There is a stainless steel crumb tray that sits underneath the toaster and this can be slid out to dispose of the crumbs it's collected, and easily slid back in. It saves getting crumbs all over the work top and is a great addition to the appliance! I also find that although the toast pops up when ready, if you are using it to warm up something smaller, like the hot cross bun I put in yesterday, it doesn't always pop up enough for you to remove it. Although Argos state that this toaster has a 'high lift' function, I find pushing the lever up quite fast gives a higher lift and allows whatever is in the toaster to pop out. If it's being stubborn. The toaster is around 38cm long x 20cm high, and 15cm deep. It's quite chunky but doesn't take up a huge amount of space considering it's a 4 slice toaster. It's easy to keep clean and a quick wipe over keeps it looking nice. Overall, I would really recommend this toaster. We bought it on a budget expecting it to be a temporary appliance in our kitchen but a few years on it's still working well and looks great. Read the complete review |

Breville PT34
by MEL0611 It is not that often we use our toaster, I always tend to have a yoghurt or fruit of a morning and my other half tends to skip it all together. However, of a weekend we do enjoya more substantial breakfast and when we realised that our rather old Morphy Richards toaster gave up on us we decided to invest in a simple, no frills, 2 slice ... toaster. After looking around we decided to invest in a Breville toaster, model number PT34. We looked at what we wanted , this being a simple to use, 2 slice toaster but that also came with a variable heat control. The toasterthat we found did all of these things so we made the purchase and here are my thoughts on the product. We purchased the Breville toaster from Argos but it can los be found online at Amazon and I think you can even pick this up at certain larger Supermarkets. The toaster will cost you around the £19.00 mark which for me is exactly the price tag that I wanted to pay. There was no point in us purchasing a rather expensive model as we simply wouldn't warrant the use of it. The toaster was well packed and upon opening there was a detailed instruction booklet as well as a one year manufacturers guarantee. We were very keen to see how the toaster worked and the quality of it so one a saturday morning, we decided to make some toast! We plugged the toaster in and tried it out. The toaster is all white in colour and features the Breville logo on the front. The toaster has a long electrical lead ( I would estimate at around 70cm) so it is convenient to plug in where you want on the kitchen work top. If there is an excess of lead, you can wrap it around the bottom of your toaster. As I mentioned, this is a 2 slot toaster and the slots are extra long and you also have the option to alter the width of the slots if you are cooking with a larger or wider piece of bread. A good feature in my opinion. To use this toaster, we have always found this to be safe and very efficient when using it. There is a stainless tell section where you need to insert the bread and then it is down to personal preference as to how you want your toast cooked, it does take a little bit of trial and error as to how the toast turns out. There is a dial on the front that allows you to set how well done you want your toast. I like my toast barely done and my other half likes it really well cooked and the toaster copes with both of these preferences really well. The toaster soon starts cooking and there is a toasting status on the front of the toaster that allows you to track it. What is great is that there are a number of features that come with this toaster, even though it is really low in price, There is a re heat facility which we have used a couple of times when we have become distracted as well as a frozen bread setting. There is also a removable crumb tray which is great for keeping the toaster clean. I also wipe the toaster down with a damp cloth and use my E cloth on the stainless steel. I would be more than happy to recommend this model and I am impressed with the efficiency and effectiveness. 5 out of 5 from me on this one Thank you for reading Read the complete review |
