Asda White Toaster
Advantages: cheap and works well
Disadvantages: short cord may be an issue for some, no crumb tray
I have had my asda toaster ever since I moved in to my new house when I separated from my husband back in April 2009. At the time I was looking to get set up for my son and I with all the essentials as cheaply as possible for the most part and so I purchased the asda toaster which from memory cost around five or six pounds. At the time I felt that it would do until I had more free money to replace it but over two years later it is still working and I have yet to replace it! Here is my review!
==How it looks==
The toaster came packaged in a cardboard box which showed a picture of the toaster on the front and its design looked quite simple and basic. I am not really worried about packaging for the most part and in cases such as this where it is only going to be thrown away I am even less worried.
Inside the cardboard box was the toaster itself which is also very simple looking in its design. The toaster is white plastic with a slightly curved look to it and for those who love all their kitchen equipment to look trendy and cool this will not be for you at all but for me it was fine as a lot of my kitchen equipment is white anyway. The toaster features a dial on the front which you can use to change how brown the toast is going to be and on this particular toaster you can choose from one to seven. The toaster also has three small buttons on the front which are used if you wish to put the toaster on a defrost setting, a reheat setting or indeed cancel the toast cooking. There is the usual push down lever on the side of the toaster which you push to lower the bread in to the toaster and which will start the toaster working. There is space for two slices of bread to be toasted at once with this toaster.
The toaster doesn't feature a particularly long cable to plug it in to the wall socket but this isn't an issue for me as where I wanted to place it I had a socket anyway but it is certainly something to be mindful of.
As I mentioned earlier when I first bought this toaster I was literally thinking that in a few months I would need to be replacing it as I couldn't see it lasting very long at all, over two years down the track the toaster is still working fine and for just a few pounds I am amazed really as I use the toaster most days of the week.
I find that although the toaster looks very basic in its design it is actually perfectly good at doing the job it is required to do. My son likes to have toast for breakfast quite a few days of the week and so we have it set on to a number three setting which just leaves the toast a golden brown colour. I cannot stand burnt toast at all-and when I say burnt if there is any black at all I have to start again as I can't stomach it and I find that this setting provides us with a nice coloured toast. I do find that if I cook myself some toast straight after making my son's that mine is a darker colour which I presume is because the toaster is still hot from making his. I don't know if this is something that happens with all toasters to be honest.
I don't really use the reheat button on the toaster but I have used the defrost button to cook frozen bread and it works well to be honest but this isn't something that I do very often. The cancel button ensures that the toast pops up straight away if you have set it on to a second cycle for whatever reason.
I also use the toaster to toast crumpets and bagels. I find that the crumpets usually need to put through on a higher setting or on a number three setting twice which obviously does take a while longer to cook, perhaps a few minutes but I am not usually in a major rush for them anyway so I don't mind this at all. I like the fact that the toaster is quite versatile in this way despite being a very cheap product.
As I mentioned the toaster only toasts two slices of bread at once which isn't usually a problem in my house as it is just my son and I. However, sometimes if I am doing something and toast for lunch it can be a bit frustrating waiting for the second lot of toast if everything else is finished! This is a really minor issue though to be honest but I would certainly say if there are more of you in your family or you like a lot of toast in a morning to look at a larger capacity toaster.
One thing I have noticed with the toaster is that literally every time you move it masses of crumbs come shooting out of the bottom which obviously requires cleaning most days. It would be nice if the toaster had a crumb tray but for such a small price I realise I am expecting too much.
I really have to recommend this toaster if you are looking for something cheap yet functional because mine has lasted me wonderfully and I would probably replace the product like for like should it break at any point as I have had a good experience with it.
Thank you for reading my review!
