Advantages: An attractive and simple appliance that works beautifully
Disadvantages: I can't honestly think of any
When our shiny plastic toast monster slowly began to display signs of madness by burning all the bread offered to it in all manner of exotic ways we realised that it had to go. I like my toast for sure, but I've never really understood the need to splash out a large sum on a piece of kit that is basically required to do just one thing, so with thrift in mind I went looking for, and found, a replacement. For a modest outlay of £24.99 I took possession of a toaster that has quickly proved to be a gem.
On first examination the Breville TT48 is an attractive appliance. It has an all-over stainless steel finish that would happily grace even the most flashy modern kitchen and all its functions are controlled from a simple push-button digital panel on the front.
But let's cut to the chase: Does it make good toast? The answer is a loud and resounding "YES". It also does it very quickly and simply. The browning control runs from 1 (very light) to 9 (very dark), with the default setting being 5. Bread of whatever thickness and size browns evenly and gently and it's a simple task to adjust the setting to suit your own personal taste. There is also a 'Cancel' button to stop any operation.
The wide and roomy slots are particularly useful for those of us who like to toast thick slices of bread and they can also easily accommodate muffins and scones. These latter are easily removed by using the 'High Lift' feature.
Toasting frozen bread is simplicity itself: Just put the frozen slice in the slot, turn on the toaster, press the 'Defrost' button and wait for the light to go out. When it does simply toast as normal. The TT48 will also reheat cold toast without burning it: Put in your cold slice, turn on the machine then press the 'Reheat' button. Your toast will pop up warm and crispy.
The wide slots and clean design mean that all crumbs will fall to the bottom into the tray for easy removal. There are no awkward corners to trap those stubborn crumbs that smoke the place out when you switch on. The stainless steel outside surface is easily restored to a shiny finish with a simple wipe of a cloth.
Another useful feature comes in the easy-to-follow instruction booklet: It contains a very useful list of handy hints to help you make perfect toast. That Holy Grail of culinary practice is now within your grasp! The TT48 also comes with a twelve-month guarantee.
I bought ours over the counter but savings can be made by buying online. After a quick web-surf I soon found a price of £18.99 quoted, and that included a guaranteed five-day delivery.
The Breville TT48 is an excellent toaster that is great value for money and an appliance that will satisfy all but the most intensive kitchen needs. I heartily recommend it.
Summary: This is a robust and versatile toaster that is especially suited for those on a budget.
