Breville Black and Steel 2 Slice Toaster...........
We have had this toaster for a good while now so I feel I have had enough use from it to warrant writing a review.
The main reason for buying a new toaster was because our old one had completely pack up on us and the only reason we chose this particular one was that it was on a half price special offer in Argos at the time we were in the market for a new one. It usually retails for £29.39 pence but we got it for just under the £15 mark. This is usually more than I would want to pay for a toaster but I was under the impression that if we spent a little more we would get a better quality toaster.
The toaster itself looks pretty slick as it is black and steel in colour and has a snazzy blue light indicator letting you know what setting that has been chosen i.e. how brown you want the toast. It is an unusual shape as it is kind of oval in appearance instead of the standard square ones we have had in the past.
There are not many special features to talk of, it has the standard removable crumb tray, it has a variable width allowance, a defrost button, power cord storage, mid-cycle cancel button, a reheat button and a high lift insert. All these features however were on out last toaster that cost around the £5 region.
The main thing that this toaster is used for is bread and the occasional crumpet and to be honest it doesn't seem to work particularly well with either. I find that it seems to brown off one side of the bread quicker than the other and the toast will always be unevenly cooked. I have now started stopping the toasting programme halfway through so that I can turn the toast around which gives a better browning.
This really is the downfall of this toaster. No matter how much a toaster costs it really should be able to perform the simple task of giving a good toasted slice and unfortunately this one doesn't. I thought that by paying that little bit more I would be having the best toast ever but how wrong could I be. I think I probably would have been better off if I had bought the cheap toaster aswe had done last time as I found our old toaster far superior in use. It may have not looked as good but it certainly did its job well and that is the bottom line when buying a toaster, you want one that makes toast well.
I would give this toaster a score of 2 stars and really that score is just for the appearance of the thing. It is straight forward enough to use but it really doesn't work as well as I would have hoped for the price. I certainly wouldn't recommend this to anyone and I am wishing it to break down so I can not feel guilty about going out and buying another one.
RUBBISH TOASTER!
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
I do hope this has been of some help/interest to you.

- 25/05/09 Great review here. Is it easy to clean out? Pity that it hasn't come to your expectations. Toasters are hard to find, the ones that actually do a uniform job and even the most expensive ones aren't always the best. |
