Having gone through 2 cheap 'value' type toasters in as many years, I decided I'd go for something far more robust. I'd noticed that many cafes and restaurants have these toasters in their kitchens and thought that if they can stand up to commercial use, they'd certainly last in my kitchen. I haven't been disappointed. Far from it! The Dualit Newgen 4 slot toaster is a commercial quality toaster and it certainly feels that way. It is very sturdy and well built from quality components and stainless steel, even down to the controls which give a solid 'clunk' feel when using them. This is built to last!
There are 2 controls on the toaster. 1 controls the heat settings, from 1 - 4 slots and also 'half' settings, allowing you to toast 1 side of a bun, teacake or bagel for example. The other control is a timer that switches the toaster off after a set amount of time. Unlike lots of other toasters, the toast will not pop out once cooking has finished, it remains in the toaster, keeping nice and hot - a great feature! The timer can take a little bit of getting used to at first; the toaster is far more powerful than more basic ones. As a result, toasting is much quicker so you do need to take care until you become familiar with it. The toast it makes is evenly toasted, every time!
The sandwich cage that sometimes comes with the toaster is fantastic. It's really easy to make lovely toasted sandwiches and the cage is very straightforward to clean. My only advice would be that you don't need to butter the outside of the bread (as you would with lots of 'ordinary' sandwich toasters) - the toastie does not stick to it.
This also has to be the only toaster whose crumb tray actually collects crumbs and doesn't cover the worktop with them!
This is a great toaster in all aspects. Firstly, the toasting is perfect in my personal experience and the bread is toasted very evenly. If you don't think the toasting is not the way you like it, there is even a control to change the heat so that you can have the toast exactly how you want it to be.
An important part of the toaster for me was that it is a 4 slice toaster and not a standard 2 slice toaster. This makes it very convenient for a family or for more people living in a house and the slots are also very wide so that buns and bagels can fit into the toaster.
There is also a slot selector which is useful so that you waste less energy, as well as a manual ejector.
Another great feature is that all the parts of the toaster are fully replaceable, so that even though this toaster is quite expensive, it will last you a very long time. Dualit have high quality toasters, and this isn't different.
