Advantages: Fast, easy toasted sandwiches
Disadvantages: May catch fire
I bought a pack of these about four months ago from the JML range at Wilkinsons.
I paid £3.99 for them but I notice that they are now being sold at £2.49.
The idea of putting sandwiches or fish fingers into these and toasting them in my regular toaster appealed to me. I thought it would be quick and easy with minimum cleaning up afterwards.
Inside the cardboard pack you get two beige coloured shiny packets. They feel as though they are made from plastic and have a kind of criss cross texture.
I assume that they are coated with a heatproof layer.
I found that because my toaster slots are not very wide I could only get an ordinary sized sandwich into the toaster, or fish fingers if I flattened them a little bit.
These packets are supposed to be reusable. You can wash, or wipe them and the instructions say that they can be used 100 times each.
However, the second time I used one of mine a black scorch mark appeared on the packet and the smell was awful because it started to burn.
I only had cheese in the sandwich so there was nothing in there that might superheat and cause this problem.
I wrote to JML and enclosed the burned packet. They wrote a letter apologising and saying that I must have included something that got too hot inside the sandwich.
They sent me two packets of toasta-bags in compensation.
However I have never used them because I am worried about the safety aspect. If I had not been in the kitchen when that bag scorched it could easily have burst into flames.
This experience has completely put me off using these again. If you do use them, don't leave them unattended.
Summary: If you use these don't leave them unattended
