      Perfect toast every time

We bought this toaster for our office about eighteen months ago and it has had a lot of use in this time. I use it every time I am on an early shift for my breakfast which is usually around three times a week. I remember it cost in the region of £32 which is quite expensive to me for a toaster as I tend to have more economical brands at home, but it was bought partly out of the tea fund and we only had to put about three pounds each in order to buy it. You can now buy it from Co-Op for £39.00, Very for £39.99 and Tesco is selling it for £46.00 which I am surprised as I usually find them quite competitive.

The toaster measures 29.5cm wide, 18cm deep and 19.5 tall, it weighs 1.67kg and it has 900w power. It is a classic looking toaster made of stainless steel and is a combination of brushed and polished metal with the front and back having a brushed soft look and the top and sides contrasting as it is quite highly polished. It has two slots and you can choose to use just the one if you are toasting one slice of bread or one crumpet or croissant. The slots are adjustable so will take thin sliced bread or huge doorsteps if this is your choice. I often toast very thick chunks of bread as I do have uncut bread whenever possible and have never got the hang of cutting dainty little slices. You can set the dial from 1 to 5 and my personal choice is three to four for white bread and two to three for brown bread and three for crumpets which are also a favourite of mine. There is a browning and defrost button which are easily adjustable and the controls are illuminated which makes it look a bit special. There is also a cancel button if you change your mind when you have pressed the lever for it to start cooking or if whatever you are toasting is done enough for your personal choice.

It has something which Kenwood have patented as 'Peek and View' which allows you to lift the toast out without stopping or cancelling, however I am sure that I have used other toasters where you can do this. I don't really use this as I think you get used to which number will produce your preferred shade of toast. The crumb tray slides out from underneath the toaster easily and it has four small non slip feet underneath. When the toast has finished it pops up very high so it is easy to grab hold of without burning your fingers as I have experienced with some other toasters that they seem to pop the toast out and then it goes back down into the toaster so is difficult to get out. With this toaster it stays up high so you have no trouble with this. Personally I usually do leave the toast for a few minutes before taking it out as I like it to be a bit cooler when I butter it as I find that if I am having marmalade or jam it spreads better this way.

I find that this toaster always browns very evenly and I have never had to turn the toast round or over to get an even finish. It seems to cook very quickly and I have never experienced any bread or crumpets sticking and burning. It can easily be wiped over with a damp cloth which we do from time to time. This isn't the cheapest of toasters but it is a good brand and is certainly well made and very good quality. If I could afford it I would buy a Kenwood for me at home as it does seem to get my toast just right every time.
