Advantages: Seems reliable so far
Disadvantages: A tall slice of bread does not fit
Following the early demise of my Tesco Value toaster, I thought I should try a more expensive model, this 2 slice toaster cost just under £20, bought at Tesco.
It looks quite smart, and would blend in to most kitchens, in fact Russell Hobbs describe it as "Smart in the Kitchen". ....smart in appearance perhaps, not totally in its toast making. The toast it produces does have darker lines on it rather than being an even toasty brown. It does have a browning control knob, with 7 settings, how many people really like very dark brown toast, with a burny taste? But its biggest design fault in my opinion is that a standard sliced loaf (such as Braces) has slices that are too tall for the toaster, so that there is always a bit at the top that hasn't been toasted.According to the instructions you can trim bread to size before toasting (theres always an answer isn't there.)Also you can't use curled, torn or misshapen bread.
On the plus side there is a defrost feature ,and you can reheat cold unbuttered toast. If toasting a currant loaf you may need a slightly different setting, to avoid burning the toast.
One feature of this toaster is that it does have wider than average toasting slots.however although these will happily fit in a thick slice, you cannot toast hot cross buns which would be nice, and have to resort to the grill.
We have had the toaster a mere three weeks or so, but I notice the outer casing is already looking a bt mottled.
It has a crumb tray, which is always a useful feature for cleaning.
Oh well maybe I should have splashed out a bit more to get a perfect toaster, I don't hate it, but I am a bit disappointed, it seems a bit old fashioned, definitely lacking in special features.
Summary: Not so smart in the kitchen

- 04/11/09 Strange how hard it seems to be to get a toaster right. |

- 04/11/09 I have had my Russel Hobbs for 3 years now. I hate it, but it's still going strong. I pray it blows up though as the toast is never right. Yours looks more modern though. |

- 03/11/09 I have the four slice Russell Hobbs. WHAT ARE THE DESIGN TEAM UP TO????? MY bread doesn't fit in it either!!! It's ridiculous. I had a good mind to return it as being unfit for purpose as you don't get toast, but 4/5th of a piece of toast. I cannot see how this got off the production line and I feel like I have been sold a pup!!! OOoooooo! I feel a heated review coming on!!! |
