Russell Hobbs 13790
Advantages: looks good, makes ok toast, crumb catching feature
Disadvantages: burns toast too much, poor design
I purchased this toaster around a year ago when moving into my new property, although I couldn't tell you how much I paid for it back then I believe they are retailing now at just over £20.00. I have to say as toasters go you are not going to get too excited about this one because it just does what it is supposed to and doesn't really have any great design features; although the addition of the crumb tray is a nice touch for easy cleaning I suppose.
To toast your bread you basically pop the slices into the slots, of which there are two and they are quite wide so thick bread will easily fit. The next step is to choose your degree of toasting, which ranges from 1 -7 and can be altered by turning the knob on the left handside of the toaster as can be seen in the diagram above either clockwise or anticlockwise; I tend to toast at around level four, but I guess that's just personal preference. To start toasting you then simply pull the lever in the middle down until you hear a click, the bread is then held in position and begins to toast.
Now, I have to agree with what other members have said about this particular model from Russell Hobbs, it does seem rather unreliable and your best bet is to keep an eye on it. Sometimes, the lever which locks the toast in places fails to engage properly, the heating element sometimes only comes on on one side and the toast seems to burn strangely regardless of what setting you have it on! Not great! However, most of the time it does work perfectly.
One other negative that I have noticed, which is a straight forward design error in my opinion is that even though the bread slots are wide enough for thick bread, the heating elements are simply too small; meaning that you always end up with approximately half an inch at the top of a slice of toast which isn't toasted at all - surely this should have been thought through before the product went into production?
Anyway, apart from those things I have listed it's an ok toaster and makes reasonable toast. It has a nice stainless steel finish which makes it look good in the kitchen, there is a button enabling you to pop up the toast if it is burning and there is also a defrost feature - although I have never use this and therefore it wouldn't be fair for me to comment on it.
Overall, I think I'll give this toaster two dooyoo stars out of a possible five - there are just too many things which let it down for me. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product to fellow dooyooers.
Thanks for reading, feel free to comment. Beanie8844.
