Tefal TT550015 Toast n Egg
by littlewelshbird Tefal Toast N' Egg TT550015 Features: - 1200w - 2 slice toaster - Boils and Poaches eggs - Re-Heat tray RRP around £34.99 The Tefal Toast N' Egg is no ordinary toaster! I bought this three years ago when I moved house. I am a big believer in "you get what you pay for". ... Having said that I was, and still am, on an extremely tight budget. So spending this much money on a toaster was a fairly big decision. It turned out to be a fantastic decision and changed the way I cooked breakfast from there on in! The toaster takes two slices of bread. It has variable heat settings from 1 to 5 depending on the thickness of your slice. Using thick white sliced bread, it takes around 2 minutes to toast two slices. The result is lovely crunchy toast that is never burnt and is evenly cooked, which is quite refreshing when compared to other models. The slots are deeper than you may think at first, so you can get the whole slice in. A lot of toasters leave the top edge exposed and thus you have to turn the toast half way through to get an even crisp. Not with this toaster! The control panel is fairly straight forward. Along side the heat controls for the toaster slots, there are four push buttons to control the heating element for the eggs. You can choose either; toast on its own, in which instance you don't need to press anything except the plunger as with a 'normal' toaster. The other three controls enable you to cook eggs alone, with no toast, or, cook eggs in conjunction with toast. The final button at the bottom is a 'stop' button which is pressed to release toast during cooking, if required, or to turn off the heating element for the eggs. All buttons are flush to the body of the toaster and so are wipe clean. There is an adequate crumb tray included. As with all toasters this needs to be emptied regularly. Having said that I only empty it about once per month and have had no problems with the crumbs building up and burning as I have done with other toasters previous to the Tefal. And so we come to the egg cooker. The element is wipe clean. I give it a wipe with white vinegar now and again to remove any residue and keep it shining. It cooks eggs by steaming them from water placed into the element. To cook eggs you place the rack on top of the element. There is room for up to four eggs here. The toaster comes complete with a measuring pot for water. On the base of this is a small sharp needle which must be used to piece the bottom of the egg before placing in the rack. This prevents cracking. Fill the measurer up to the desired level. Hard medium or boiled, from 1 egg to 4 eggs on each level. On the back of the pot there is a section for measuring water for poached eggs which I will explain shortly. Once the eggs are pierced, place them upside down in the rack. So the pierced side is facing upwards. Then put the lid on. The lid has a small hole in the top to allow steam to escape. Then press the button and off it goes. I find this much easier to use than a conventional saucepan. I am a fairly good cook and am able to boil and egg the old fashioned way without a problem. However this toaster takes the hassle out of it. There are no saucepans to wash up, no timers to set, no leaning over the stove waiting in anticipation for cracks to appear. With the Tefal I can put the eggs on to cook, and get on with other things, like making an all important cuppa or washing up etc. Having said that I would strongly recommend against leaving the device unattended as with any other appliance. Poaching eggs hasn't been quite so successful. The machine comes with what I can only describe as a mini frying pan. Fill the measurer up to the desired level for poaching, these marks are on the reverse of it. It is only big enough for one egg. It has a non stick coating. The idea is that this sits on top of the rack with an egg in it, then the lid over the top and the egg is poached by the steam. I've only tried this two or three times and haven't been that impressed. The first time the egg stuck to the pan, with disastrous consequences! The second time I wiped a little oil around the pan with some kitchen paper and this helped the sticking but it overcooked. Which is my error and not that of the machine. So after that I have stuck to boiled eggs only. I'm sure if I persevered I would get the hang of it, but, the only way of getting the egg out is to wipe a small amount of oil around the pan, and this can be tasted on the finished product. This may be fine for most, but first thing in the morning it was a little overpowering. In addition to eggs, there is a warming tray provided. This is designed to re heat sausages or bacon etc. I haven't yet used this function so cant comment on its usability or effectiveness. If on the rare occasion I do have bacon I cook from fresh under the grill. So to summarise, the Tefal Toast N' Egg is far more economical than boiling a large pan of water, which would use a lot of gas/electric in the process. I have a very active job and work long hours. So two or three days a week I like to have a good breakfast, rather than just cereal. The toast and egg enables me to do this without having to concentrate too much first thing in the morning! There is hardly any washing up and its much faster. It may not be suitable for a large family as it only takes two slices rather than four, and there is only room for boiling up to four eggs. Having said that I would highly recommend it to all, in my opinion, no kitchen is complete without one. Read the complete review |

Tefal TF37051 5Classique
by JJ2010JAYJAY I bought this toaster from Argos last week as my old toaster broke. It cost £49.99 which is okay, but I have found that it does take a long time to toast bread and cooks it unevenly, but I'll get into that later. ~Design~ The toaster looks very basic and average, the same as all other toasters really. The thing I ... like about this toaster is that it is red at the sides and mainly silver at the front. It looks modern and doesn't look cheap at all. It is a four slice toaster and is quite large, but not too big. On the front, there are the two twister things where you set the heat settings (which go from 1-7) as well as various other buttons for its other features. Sorry if I got too technical with the whole 'twister things' business. ~Features~ As I said, this toaster has 7 heat settings, which isn't as much as my previous toaster with 9, but is still very good. The toaster has a few other features that are pretty standard, but one I've never heard of before. It has the simple cancel, reheat, and defrost functions, but it also has this setting that cooks bagels so that it toasts one side and warms the other side. I haven't used this feature yet because I don't have bagels often, but it sounds like a handy idea. The other thing it has is the feature that allows you to raise the toast up a bit to make it easier to take out after toasting. However, it only raises it the tiniest little bit and is hardly worth it at all. ~Cooking~ The main problem with this toaster is how it toasts. It took three minutes just to cook toast that was hardly brown. I left it in for another 30 seconds so it browned a little bit more, but it was still white on one side. I feel that £50 is a lot of money for a toaster that can't even cook toast evenly, let alone that it takes such a long time in the first place. The thing I liked about my old toaster was that it was designed to cook quickly, and it also cooked toast evenly. It also had the feature to raise up the toast, but it raised it a lot higher so it was easier to take out without any risk of burning yourself on the metal at the top. ~General~ Like all toasters, this one is easy to use. You pull down the handle thing (another one of my very technical words) and it begins toasting...very slowly. However, the buttons to activate the reheat, defrost, and cancel settings were not very clear, and it wasn't until I looked in the instruction manual that I found out what the buttons did. Cleaning the toaster is quite easy, although as I have only had it for a week, I cannot comment on it much. It has two removable trays at the bottom where crumbs fall on, which you can then empty out in the bin. Most toasters have this function nowadays, but it is very handy. Another problem I have found with this toaster is that it gets very hot when you toasty something. Not just at the top, but round the sides and front as well. It caught me of guard the first time as my old toasters exterior never got hot, and I burnt myself a little bit. Obviously you can understand that the metal top may get quite hot, but not the entire exterior. I find that quite silly and somewhat annoying. Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this toaster because I think it is expensive for a toaster that cooks very slowly and unevenly. If you cook bagels though, it might be handy, but I haven't tried this feature so I am unsure how well it works. I've given the product three stars, but it would probably be closer to 2.5 Read the complete review |

Tefal TT704115 Avanti Toaster
by koshkha ~ Village Life ~ The village where I live has two great attractions that draw in the visitors though admittedly not in great numbers. The first is the oldest Saxon church in Europe which occasionally opens its doors to visitors if the vicar is in the mood and the other is our fantastic recycling shop - Ace Reuse. Northampton ... council - or whoever it is that runs the local 'civic amenity sites' (or what we used to call 'rubbish tips') have sub-contracted the recycling of electrical items, furniture and other goodies to a handful of small shops in the area and we're lucky enough to have one of them nearby. If you're the kind of person who buys a new toaster because you're bored with the old one or you've redecorated your kitchen and the old one doesn't 'fit' anymore, you can take your old electricals round to Ace or drop them in the 'reuse' area of one of the local tips and they'll check they work, carry out any little repairs, PAT test them and then sell them on. Impressive huh? And great for guilt reduction if you've bought an appliance you didn't REALLY need - you can tell yourself you recycled the old one. Most impressive of all is that they sell them on for ridiculously small prices. We've had two fabulous DAB digital radios and two toasters - one of which is this lovely Tefal Avanti two slice toaster which hubby picked up for less than a fiver last summer. ~Necessity is the mother of getting a new toaster~ I have a flat where I live during the working week and where I had a cheap £5 supermarket toaster. Luckily for me, it blew up when my husband used it so he felt he had to replace it. Our home toaster therefore moved up to the flat and he went in search of a 'new to us' one to fill the gap. He came back with a rather nice one and then just a week or two later spotted this, loved the way it looked, and brought that one home too. So in our garage we are now raring to go with a spare 'standby' toaster for the next time we have visitors or the next time the toaster self-destructs. How's that for organised? The Tefal Avanti is an attractive toaster - if you are capable of finding toasters attractive - and at just £4 or £5 it was a lot cheaper than the really fancy one I bought my sister last Christmas. It's a bit of a man's toaster with lots of brushed metal, knobs and levers and best of all it's a fantastic toaster for people who like crumpets - which of course we do - for reasons I'll explain later. If you don't have the benefit of a great cheap source of toasters, one like this will set you back around £40 although the original manufacturers price is over £60. ~Tell me about the Tefal?~ Obviously I don't have an instruction book so I don't know as much about what the toaster is 'supposed' to do as I would if I'd bought it new and boxed. Consequently what I can say is based almost entirely on my experience of using it. The toaster has a black cool-wall body and a brushed metal front. Brushed metal definitely beats shiny metal hands down as it doesn't pick up fingerprints and need wiping every time you touch it. The toaster has a great 'angled' design. What that means is that rather than putting things in at the top and having them drop straight down, it's set at an angle so you put things in slightly from the side and they slide in diagonally when you push the lever on the left hand side. I don't know if you've ever tried to toast a crumpet in a cheap toaster that doesn't have a 'lift' function but if you have you'll understand why it's important to have a lifter. If you don't then you've probably taken your life in your hands poking knives in to try to jiggle things out. With the Avanti there's a handy lever on the right side which lifts all the gubbins of the toaster up and pokes your crumpet or other small item out the top so that it's easy to grab. The toaster has a 1200 watt 'engine' and toasts really quickly. Control comes from a large dial on the front which can be altered according to how brown or burned you like your toast and to allow for different thicknesses of bread. For thicker bread set the number lower than for thin sliced. If you get nervous half way through and want to check how your bread is doing, there's a handy button to cancel the cycle. Talking of thick bread, the slots are very wide which means you can use the toaster for a wide variety of bread thicknesses. When you put the bread in and push the lowering slot, it grasps the bread and lowers it in carefully. There's a pitifully tiny crumb tray which holds next to nothing. After I filled the kitchen with smoke at lunch time one day I had a good look and realised that there were rather a lot of bits of burnt stuff in the bottom of the toaster that weren't making it to the tray. I did what all practical folk do - unplugged it, took it outside and gave it a damned good shake. So that's sorted for a few weeks. If you're one of those people who freezes bread and forgets to defrost it before you are inspired by the thought of having some toast, there's a button to push for toasting frozen bread. There's a second button which I've never used but which - by process of deduction - seems to be for reheating bread that you have already toasted. Now I know what it's for I shall give it a go since I'm a demon for letting my toast go cold in the toaster. ~ HIGHLY recommended~ If I had paid £40 for this toaster I wouldn't be complaining. I thought our old toaster was good until I got this one and I'm very impressed by both its speed, its degree of controllability and it's suave good looks. I'm certainly persuaded that it's worth buying a good name when getting a toaster and not just picking up the cheapest supermarket toaster and trying not to electrocute yourself every time something gets stuck. I think we'll be keeping this one until it blows up. Or until my husband goes flirting with another toaster round at the recycling shop. Read the complete review |
