Advantages: A good lightweight contemporary looking and functiaonal toaster
Disadvantages: Can feel a bit shabby and cheaply built
Based on my previous experience we knew that when we bought a new toaster that it would definately have to be a 4 slicer !. We also knew that becuase we both like different levels of browning (I being that of the darker more toastier bread and she of well not !) knew that we also needed one with the variant knob that can control browning. Cost is important to us and although it would be nice to have a more glamourous one, a bit like a Morphy Richards, Russel Hobbs, or Breville type, but you`ll find that most of their range cost around £30-£50. We wasnt prepared to spend that much so I bought this one for £19.97 in store- I comes with a nice 12 month warranty too, so tesco will fix it if breaks.
The Box itself has dimensions of 20cm tall, 30cm in length, 30cm deep, and as you would expect is very likght - so you should have no problem if you need to position it in your kitchen it should pose no problem. Its a little bulky, so it takes up more room then your average compact 4-slice toaster so it may not be ideal for everybody.
Its design looks very good asthetically, its silver and matt black plastic desgin looks good in most contemporary kitchens, but probably not for the more rustic traditionally decorated kitchens. It's main componant body is mainly polished steel, which is easy to clean but I found with toasters like this that it looks good but mine is placed near the cooker and when fat gets splashed onto it, it is very hard to clean afterward. It has a matt black plastic base and the dual control areas, the plastic buttons are hard plastic resin light grey buttons, knobs, and levers. The build quality is good for what it can do, namely functionality but it can feel alittle cheap sometimes especially when you try to shake the crumbs out of it. The buttons and levers are lightweight and thin plastic so it makes it feel a little loose.
It can be very difficult to clean a toaster , most people like me just give them a good shake to get the crumbs out , or if you are fortunate enough to have a crumb drawer they empty that and this toaster does...ha, so I do !, other then that all I do is give the outside a wipe down every now and then. This toaster seems to be designed with that mind, and it has two individual well designed crumb trays that collect most of the crumbs but you still need to shake it out. As well as this the cage that encloses the toast, within the toaster, also prevents anything getting burnt onto the element but I find that although there is width control the bread can still get caught on the way out and large bits of toast can faLl into the filament.
The Controls for each pair of toasting slots are simple, there are just 2 buttons on the left of each one marked 'Reheat' and 'Frozen', and there is a knob numbered 1 to 7 which controls the browning level of the toasting and 1 button on the right marked 'Cancel, and the toasting lever. Its very simple and thats the way it should be. 'Reheat' does what you`d expect, if your toast gets cold and a 'Frozen' function to defrost freezer bread, but to be honest I never really use it. There is a useful feature that the toasting slots are pretty big (approx) 5cm wide and there is also a lever to change the width so you can toast thicker toasting bread that is now available. When the bread does eventually come out it pops up nice and high so you dont burn your fingers trying to pick the toast out of the toaster.
So far I have had no problems with this toaster and it seems to be doing its job well
Summary: You shouldnt be dissapointed , especially with the price tag !
