I used to be a smoker, not that I condone it now. Of course, I was never the 'normal' guy and as such I was never a 'normal' smoker. My friends regularly had a go at me for breathing out a small puff of smoke before actually taking it back - not noticing that in doing so I was preserving my lungs and making it less harsh on my throat. I smoked maybe 20 a day, but through my smoking method I doubt its as bad as a regular smoker who has 20 a day. Still, I quit when I met Leah. I'll leave that for another opinion. What I am to talk about today are some of the strangest cigarettes I've ever had. They went by the name of Consulate and were introduced to me by a friend of mine at the time. I worked in Sainsbury's and was on a night shift when he proffered me one. Not having my own on me (they were in my locker, I am not a skinflint like that!) I took one and sparked up. Boy did I get a surprise. There was a strange feeling about the smoke, it seemed lighter than the others. Then was the taste, it was almost minty. Its hard to say it tasted of lockets or anything because frankly it didnt, but it was certainly refreshing. I still wouldnt recommend you smoke them when you have a cold, smoking when ill always seems appallingly ill fated anyway, but they are good as a refreshing cigarette for the addicted smoker. Thinking there was something amiss I asked him what they were. He handed me a white box with a green label and I immediately realised I was smoking a menthol cigarette. I checked the box further and was surprised to find they were a full strength nicotine and tar cigarette, despite seeming so light in the lungs. Thats possibly dangerous given the added smoking potential it gives, but I wasnt worried at the time. There was a very distinct advantage to these things though and that was non-smokers. When I was in a bar I would often find people commenting to me about how refreshing the sm
ell was and that even a woman who normally wouldnt let you sit near her with a smoke stick would tolerate it. Admittedly it still isnt as good as not smoking, but others seemed to appreciate the less vile smell. Mother didnt notice when I got home either (I was young ok!). Anyway, I looked around to buy these cigarettes and found them in all the major supermarkets in packs of 20's. They stopped doing the 10 pack although you may still find them dotted around. having tried Lambert and Butler and Berkeley menthol I have to say consulate are better, but I still wouldnt recommend smoking of any kind. Just remember, its now £4.50 for 20 and you can smoke those in less than a day when addicted. In the true sense of the government laws I must now state: SMOKING CAUSES CANCER! - enjoy

At least thats what it says on the packet. Okay, so smoking is bad for you. Correction: chips are bad for you, smoking will severely limit your life. But if you are going to smoke, which brand to choose? Well, i have progressed through the years from Embassy to Benson & Hedges to Camel (slogan: they make you cough!) to Consulate. A borrowed one from a friend, and switched instantly. So much easier than sucking a polo mint while you smoke. The choice of menthol ciggies is pretty poor in the UK. My menthol of choice is Marlboro Lights Menthol, but they are very hard to find. Consulate are a good next best. If menthol ciggies were banned, id find it easier to quit. So come on Tony Blair, get these suckers banned! [update] quit smoking 11th June 2001 so far so good
