Advantages: Cheap and long lasting

Disadvantages: Far too strong and hard to roll with

Although I like smoking normal cigarettes I have to admit there is a certain satisfaction and dare I say it, coolness, about smoking roll-ups. They're cheaper than branded smokes and last much longer, but on the downside you need to know how to roll. Learning how to roll has the advantage of awarding you a few more cool points, and generally stops strangers asking you for a fag outside nightclubs, but it does mean all your mates will want you to roll for them.

I usually buy two separate brands of rolling tobacco, Morning Virginia and Drum. Although Morning Virginia is my favourite, being a lot sweeter, it is a lot more expensive. Drum on the other hand is a lot cheaper, being about £2-2.50 for 12.5g, and comes with a handy sticky pad to keep your Rizla's on. Drum has what I'd call the average tobacco taste, having a sort of woody odour, which is pleasant change from the harsh chemical palette of branded cigarettes. However, Drum tobacco is a lot stronger than normal cigarette tobacco and it's very easy to make your roll too fat. If, like me, you're used to Richmond's and Lambert and Butler you can find Drum to be a little strong, which can leave you feeling unpleasantly light headed. Of course, that means you don't smoke as much, which is hardly a bad thing.

Although Drum is quite a thick cut tobacco I don't usually have too many problems rolling with it, as long as I remember that a little goes a long way. When I have money (which is nearly never) Richmond Kings will always be my cancer of choice, but I'm happy enough to settle for Drum until the moths move out of my wallet.

An extra word of advice. The best place to buy Drum is on the continent, specifically Amsterdam. When I last there I bought a 50g pack of Drum for five euros, which should have been closer to £10 in the UK.

Summary: I'd personally rather save up for Morning Virginia
