Advantages: Aid to stop smoking
Disadvantages: Still contains nicotine
What is it?
The electronic cigarette is a device that simulates the functions of a regular cigarette. It is a completely smoke free device that uses suction to heat an element which makes the cigarette end appear to glow, it generates a mist which can be exhaled giving the appearance of smoke and at the same time gives a dose of nicotine to the user.
How does it work?
The cigarette itself is made up of ....parts. The tip of the device is painted orange to symbolise 'glowing', the main 'white' section of the cigarette is actually a battery whilst the base 'filter' is actually a capsule that screws off, this capsule contains a liquid jelly that itself contains nicotine.
Where can you buy it?
Currently this is only available on the internet but with it's popularity ever increasing I would not be surprised to see it in pharmacies very soon
How much does it cost?
There are a range of 'strengths' available: High, Medium (Malboro Light like), Low, Zero and Menthol. The starter pack is £28.50 and includes the complete cigarette, a USB charger, 4 cartridges and a carry case.
Refills are available in packs of ten (approximately equivalent to 100 normal cigarettes) and are £7.50
Does it work?
Yes however it depends on the desired outcome of the user. Some people use this whilst out in public (e.g. in pubs) to eliminate having to go outside, some use it as an aid to cutting down tobacco intake and some use it as a complete anti-smoking regime.
I have seen and tried this myself and am very impressed. If you were normally a 20-a-day smoker and you decided to give up tobacco and use these then you would spend half as much in one year (and the cost is expected to drop as popularity increases).
It has been suggested that if you are using these whilst drinking in a pub/club that you speak to the bar staff to confirm it is ok to use them. They are still relatively new to the market and therefore could inadvertently upset other customers who are unaware of them.
Summary: Healthy alternative to tobacco

- 17/05/09 Does it taste like normal cigs? And do you feel satisfied after having it, just as you would with a normal one? x |

- 15/04/09 the vapour you exhale in just steam, completely harmless. Nicotine is the addictive bit of smoking, the tar is the harmful aspect. With normal cigarettes you are inhaling and exhaling harmful chemicals which harms you and those passive smokers near you. |

- 08/04/09 So the "smoke" (or vapor) that you blow out isn't considered harmful at all, to the smoker or to anyone in the vicinity?
I guess I have never really known what it is in regular cigarettes that is so harmful; I assumed it was the nicotine. But if these still contain nicotine, then what is it that makes them safer or healthier than regular cigarettes? Is it the lack of tar or something else?
Very intriguing product!
