Overall you can't complain about this product but there is also not much to get excited about.

Golden Virginia is your standard cigarette brand. In the UK it is currently the most smoked brand. Ultimately, it's pretty boring but it is very cheap and does exactly what it needs to do. There is not much wrong with this product but it is also hard to get excited about.

You should also consider looking at the yellow packs as well as these. Imperial recently carried out a lot of research and development on Golden Virginia and came up with a new blend. Personally, I much prefer the new blend but they are quite different so you might not agree.

The problem with this brand it the fact is often looked down on. This is the cheapest stuff so people assume you're out of money when you are buying this. I tend to smoke this more at home more. It can also make a real mess of your fingers. The tips get this horrible brown colour that makes it look as if your fingers are rotting. Though, I suspect this is more a criticism of rolling tobacco in general and if it is a big problem you can always get one of those cigarette rolling machines - then you stick these in a Davidoff pack and all the problems are solved.

      ...

I brought a 12.5g pouch of gv last summer and within 24 hours I became rapidly sick with stomach cramps, chest pains, head aches and a racing heart !! At first I thought this was a bug of sort ? im not a heavy smoker 5 -8 a day !? I l forgot to take the pouch in question with me round my girlfriends house and brought some gv from shop near hers.....by the morning I felt 80% better ,,by accident I left new pouch round hers and returned home and later that day used the old pouch,,,within minutes of smoking the first rolley I was back as bad as I was to begin with.the next day I actually took the pouch to the local police station convinced I had been sold conterfitt tobacco and have never returned to the place of purchase !! skip forward a year,,, same size pouch but this time worse with more extreme symptoms (I was considering going to A+E ) once again i thought it to something other than the tobacco,,i went two days without and felt great, then to prove to myself it was the tobacco i had a rolley and with in an hour i was puking my guts up !!!! This pouch also ended up at the local police station and a full investigation was launched in the local area as i learned i was not the only person who had handed there tobacco in !!!!! Two months later i bump into old friend who complained of simmaler symptoms who also smoked GV,he mentioned this site and other people suffering the same,,,,and look at all the complaints !!!! Think im gunna contact GV and find out what hell is going on !!!!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Definitely the best of the bunch of available brands

PRICE: Currently £8.04 for 25g and £15.80 for 50g at my local Sainsbury's

NB: This is not a piece which promotes or encourages smoking. It is merely a review of a product.

Golden Virginia is a hand-rolling tobacco which has been manufactured and sold since 1877, which is quite a feat for any product.

When financial hardship bit me viciously some years ago, I, as a seasoned smoker who continues to find it impossible to quit, was forced to switch over from tailor-made cigarettes to roll-ups. Since making this transition, I find that I am spending only about a quarter of what I used to on my addiction, plus I am generally healthier in that I cough far less since I've been smoking roll-ups.

The visual aspect of the packaging of Golden Virginia tobacco hasn't changed at all during my lifetime, although the design has from the point of view of materials used and features such as the introduction of a press-seal closure, which helps to keep the tobacco fresh. The product is sold in 25g or 50g packs, and I personally find the larger packs to be more economical. The pack is made of quite thick laminated plastic, coloured with the familiar green background and gold lettering. On the front of the pack is the standard health warning, together with a freephone number to use should you want help with quitting smoking, and a note to say that the manufacturers of Golden Virginia encourage this. This note of encouragement is a recent addition to Golden Virginia's packaging.

On opening the packet, the tobacco inside is in a dense, moist block, giving off a slightly sweet, almost nutty aroma. The colour is a mid-brown, tan sort of hue, and the pieces of tobacco are very finely shredded....more so than most other brands.

Although Golden Virginia is one of the more expensive brands, I personally find it to largely be more economical. Due to the fine cut of the tobacco, and so long as I shred it with my fingers before rolling my cigarettes, it ultimately goes further as less is needed. The task of shredding the tobacco with my fingers before rolling is arduous, but it is well worth the effort.

Golden Virginia is a mild tobacco, being very easy to inhale (I don't inhale deeply, but enough to judge how rough or smooth the product is). The taste is a little on the nutty side, quite pleasing, and totally non-pungent. As a cigarette which has been made with Golden Virginia is burning, it doesn't give off an unpleasant, earthy odour that some tobaccos can. When I have been in the company of non-smokers (who don't mind me indulging in my addiction in their presence), they tell me they find the second-hand smoke totally unoffensive, and that the smell is something they can happily tolerate. I have tried other tobaccos whereby my non-smoking friends and family members have virtually run from the room choking and almost vomiting from the smell of the fumes, but this isn't the case with Golden Virginia. I also find that the overall smoking smell doesn't cling quite so viciously to my hair, clothes and furniture.

I roll my day's supply of cigarettes all in one go, and after that task is completed, the tips of my thumbs and index fingers will be nicotine-stained - which arises from the manual shredding of the tobacco - but this is easily washed off. The manual shredding of the tobacco in preparation for rolling the cigarettes is quite time-consuming and rather boring, but I find it necessary to do it thoroughly, in order to make the product last as long as possible. The more finely the tobacco is shredded before use, the more cigarettes it will make. This applies to all brands of rolling tobacco, but being as Golden Virginia is manufactured and sold with its pieces already fine in texture, the task is easier to perform.

A 50g pack of Golden Virginia will last me about a week, satisfying my craving and being far cheaper than tailor-made cigarettes, which I used to spend about £35-£40 per week on, so there is a definite and very welcome saving.

If you aren't a smoker, then my advice would without question be a heartfelt "Don't, don't, don't start!!!", but if you are already and irreversibly hooked on the weed, then I'd strongly recommend giving Golden Virginia a try. It is smooth, the fumes appear to cause anti-smokers less problems than other brands, and although it may from the price not initially seem so, works out to be very economical in comparison to its cheaper rivals.

        Disadvantages

All in all a good quality great tasting classic tobacco

I've been smoking roll up cigarettes for a good few years now, and this is the tobacco id most often buy. It has a classicly rich flavour yet is quite smooth, its not too strong either.
Its not the cheapest of brands, however it is renown for its quality. One problem alot of people have is that upon opening the pouch the tobacco is slightly too moist, and doesn't smoke quickly enough when rolled. Although this is true, after 24 hours the tobacco is the perfect consistency and will keep from drying out for longer than most tobaccos.
As for flavour it has a rich and smoky flavour with a slightly tangy note coming through, which balances it out nicely. More complex than most due to the blend of tobacco's used this is quite a pleasant taste as far as tobacco goes.
In every tobacco pouch you find offcuts, little bits of the tobacco plant, which arn't part of the smokeable leaf, there a good indicator as to the quality of tobacco, the more bits you find...the worse the tobacco, which is why you rarely find any in Golden Virginia.
All in all a tasty good quality tobacco.

I smoked Golden Virginia for 40 years, but the quality has deteriorated radically over the last 4 years or so starting with the odd bad pack, and ending up with never getting a good one (I only buy from supermarkets and established newsagents).I converted to Amber Leaf over a year ago. It isn't as good as GV was, but it's a lot better than GV is these days, although I have very recently had the odd bad pack of Amber Leaf (labelled "Limited Edition", as it happens).

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Never buying this again.

After hearing to much about this popular tobacco (Supposedly the most popular hand rolling tobacco) I decided to give it a try. I purchased the 12.5 gram limited edition version of this tobacco ( I have no idea if this is different, to me it just seemed a different coloured pouch) and it cost me a ridiculous £3.87! Which is by far the most expensive hand rolling tobacco, and I really wasn't too impressed! Opening the pouch i find there to be an airtight lock, which was a positive of the pouch, but when the tobacco was revealed was when my opinion on this tobacco started to go down. The tobacco was slightly moist, and had a neutral aroma, so i thought it would be good for rolling. Alas, I was wrong. This is one of the hardest tobaccos to roll, and it all clumped together in the pouch, giving it a very 'factory' produced appearance. After completing my rollie, i lit up. My first impressions were that I had to inhale using all my strength to get a decent drag, and when I finally did, it didn't feel worth it. The taste? Stale, dead, just shit. I didn't get any buzz whatsoever, and after I had finished smoking this overrated crap, I had a very stale taste in my mouth, that generic cigarette taste, that you don't get from any other rolling tobacco, only cheap factory made cigarettes. Overall, I don't see what the fuss is about. It's expensive, so people don't buy it for the free papers like amber leaf, it's not particularly good quality, like everything imperial tobacco has taken over, (they ruined drum) and I'm never buying this again, peace.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

It's the best tobacco for people who enjoy a lighter taste

I will start of my stating my opinion on this type of tobacco, I have been smoking it since last year and have tried other tobacco brands but i personally believe that Golden Virginia is the best tobacco, due to its taste, ease of rolling and the not so harsh take back. The tobacco has a very sweet taste before and during smoking it. It leaves you with a sweet taste on your tongue and doesn't hit your throat hard when you take back, which is a positive in my opinion. The pouch has a airtight seal unlike many other brands, the airtight seal ensure that the tobacco stays nice and moist so you can always roll a fresh roll up. I believe if people are struggling to try and find a tobacco which is easy to roll with i'd highly recommend GV as it's quite moist and rolls quite smoothly. One disadvantage i'd say about the tobacco is that it's compacted quite tightly so you can't let the tobacco breathe and it's quite stringy so you'd have to pick it apart so you wouldn't have to drag on the roll up too hard. But on the other hand one advantage of the tobacco being packed tightly is that when you get down to the bottom and think you haven't got a lot left when you break it up you realize that you have more than enough for probably another 10 rollies. In my opinion i'd definitely buy this product it's the best in its range.

I love Golden Virginia so much that I left cigarettes for them 8 years ago & im not going back. I get it cheap as well from CQOut.com from a seller called Sales_Rewm if anyone wants to get some. It's secure which is great because the seller doesnt get his or her money from the site until I click a button saying I have received my order & im happy with it.

what happened to GV quality ???

Nowadays burns on the side like a match stick as soon as I light it. Not just me all my friends who smokes it says the same. And we are all pissed offfff!!!!! That also means I do not need lesson in how to roll or is there something wrong with the paper or else.
Since last half of 2010 quality gone down. I know alot of fakes around but the real thing it self has a lot hard pieces inside pouch and tobacco itself much longer in length. Been smoking it for years and now very very dissapointed. I presume quality checks are just pass easy, actually I am even relating this to economic down turn in multi levels such as tobacco collection made in different location, redundancy towards fast low quality packing and more. Shame I don`t like any other tobacco brands aroma but now I am forced to try others. Not much options regarding taste but closest I may try is probably drum. If Golden Virginia kept their product quality level at highest always would never go else where.
