Advantages: mild and moist
Disadvantages: smoking is bad for you
I'm going to have to admit to the fact that I am a smoker, and have smoked since I was around 15 I am now 31 so I don't have to tell you how long! I used to smoke tailor made cigarettes such as the well known brand Lambert & Butler. I probably smoke between 10 and 20 a day it depends what I am doing, at around £5.12 a packet I was finding the cost too expensive, I felt bad enough that I smoked without spending a large amount of our income on cigarettes. I decided to changed my smoking brand and go onto rolling tobacco as it is much cheaper, here are my thoughts.
The tobacco I decided to buy was Golden Virginia purely as this was the only brand that I was aware of; a few of my friends smoked it so I had seen it before. Golden Virginia comes in four different sizes, these are:
12.5g at £2.97
14g at £3.34
25g at £5.79
50g at £11.27
The tobacco comes in a green plastic re sealable bag. It has the well know label of golden Virginia on the front which most will recognise. It states on the packet that it is smoked all around the world; this gives me confidence that it is a high quality tobacco. The thing that I hate about the packaging is that it has a government warning telling the consumer how bad smoking is for us. We do know that smoking is really bad for us we don't need reminding, if you are a smoker then you will know how bad smoking health wise can make you feel. To top it off now and to scare us even more they now put a picture on the packets to show how bad it is. The picture I have at present is a man in the morgue, I know it's meant to shock us and it does.
Rolling tobacco if you don't know means that you actually roll your own cigarettes using cigarette papers, a well known brand you have probably heard of is rizzla . I like to use tips too just so I don't get the tobacco in my mouth. Once I rolled a few I did master the art of rolling and now have it down to a T. The great thing about golden Virginia is that it is very moist, which helps it not to dry out. It is in a re sealable packet too so this also helps to keep your tobacco fresh. Some like to use a tin to store their tobacco in but with Golden Virginia I don't feel this is necessary. I have tried other brands but they haven't come close to Golden Virginia.
What I like when I smoke golden Virginia is that fact that it is really very smooth. I tried another brand a while back but it was so harsh it hurt the back of my throat. With some tobaccos when you first wake in the morning your throat can hurt from what you smoked the previous day. With golden Virginia I have never had this; it doesn't irritate my throat in anyway. Golden Virginia is a fairly light tobacco I find that if a tobacco is too strong I am unable to smoke a whole roll up; sometimes it can make me gag a bit.
When looking at the tobacco it does give the impression of quality it feels moist, and is of dark colour. Each flake of tobacco is small and fine, some of the cheaper tobacco's I have tried have thicker and larger flakes.
The best thing about rolling tobacco against tailor made cigarettes is you don't get the chemical taste they put in the cigarettes. At least with tobacco you know what you are smoking with cigarettes I dread to think what they have put in them chemical wise.
Golden Virginia rolling tobacco isn't too sweet either some you get are quite sweet which I really don't like. I don't like them too bitter but when they are too sweet you can really taste it on your lips after and it does take a while for it to go. I hate smoking when it leaves a bad after taste in your mouth for ages, I know to some degree smoking will but I feel with golden Virginia it is limited.
A great plus for rolling tobacco against tailor made cigarettes is that when you light up and put it in the ashtray it will not burn out on it's own, a roll up will simply stop burning so you haven't wasted any!
To sum it up I really wouldn't go back to tailor made cigarettes, they are too expensive compared to rolling your own. I smoke around a 50g packet a week. It costs me a little below £12 with cigarettes it would cost me at least £40 a weeks so I am saving around £28 a week. I feel that Golden Virginia is the best tobacco available as it is mild, doesn't dry out and not a harsh smoking tobacco. I did only give it four stars as smoking is very bad for you so for health reasons I have dropped a star.
Summary: the nicest rolling tobacco available
