Advantages: Financial benefits, reduced consumption, Health 'benefits'

Disadvantages: Learning to roll can be troublesome, Social acceptance

As a smoker, albeit of 'only' five years, I've tried many different brands of cigarette from all around the globe, and I've come to the conclusion that hand-rolling your own cigarettes is the only option in the UK.

Here's why;

1.) Cost.

Whilst I pay my way like anyone else, I highly object to being taxed more for something I do on a daily basis. With cigarettes rapidly approaching £4.10 a box, it's much more cost effective to smoke roll-ups.

2.) Health.

Given that smoking is unhealthy, why not try and make your cigarettes less damaging. Whilst roll-ups do not avoid the health implications of smoking, they do not contain anywhere near as many of the 400+ chemicals found in normal cigarettes. Makes sense to me.

3.) Outlook.

As I've already mentioned, smoking is not cheap. There's nothing worse than lighting a cigarette, only to find that your bus is coming down the road. Smoking roll-ups helps remove the feeling of having wasted a cigarette due to the reduced cost of smoking. It doesn't feel like such a waste of money throwing one away to get the train.

4.) Consumption.

Four out of the five people in my department are smokers (including me, obviously). Whilst the others smoke about 10-15 cigarettes a day, I find that I only smoke 5-10 a day. Guess who's hand-rolling? The fact is that I think more about whether or not I really want to smoke, and as a result don't smoke as much.

There are, of course, reasons to continue smoking normal cigarettes, but I can't think of any that are good enough for me to recommend normal cigarettes over roll-ups. Whilst it could be argued that hand-rolling cigarettes might not be appropriate in certain situations (such as in a nightclub), I've generally not experienced problems with roll-ups. Stop wasting money - smoke roll-ups...

Nope, sorry. Can't roll them, they taste pants and they're damp and limp and pathetic. Um...yeah. Not a fan ;)

Bah! What a good alibi, hand-rolling to diminish your cigarette consumption. Joking aside, you are right about the added chemicals from the cigarette factory and I dare say that pure tobacco is quite harmless as compared to the ready-made cigarettes, just cannot vouch for the taste though. There also some sense in your justification that hand-rolling somewhat discourages the smoker due to the task of rolling. At any rate, smoking is still bad for one's health, be it the smoker's or the others' who get to inhale the second-hand smoke. Useful op there, keep on puffing... Alex
