Advantages: none

Disadvantages: They stink

In a moment of what now seems to have been total madness, I decided whilst in our local confectioner to purchase a pack of Herbal Cigarettes. There were several different variations to choose from and I really didn't have clue if any were any good. They were all priced around the £3.50 -£4.20 mark, which is about a quid less than my normal cigarette. I plumped for the nicest looking packet thinking this might well be the nicest tasting selection. Since I haven't purchased any of the other varieties I guess I'm never going to find out if the choice I made was correct. The reason for this is simple they nearly damn well killed me.

In one of (my too many) occasions where I deemed it time for a cigarette, I opened the pretty floral packaging which if nothing else was a little inviting. It felt and looked just like any other packet of cigarettes, until I opened it. There was an evil almost decaying smell coming from the pretty packet. How could something so nice provide such a vile and nauseous smell? I pulled one of the twenty cigarettes from the packet trying not to breath in or catch anymore of the disgusting odour.

It again looked quite normal, same size shape and appearance as an ordinary cigarette; even the tip was the same. I hesitantly placed it into my mouth and pondered for a second before bringing the lit lighter to bear upon the cigarette. It was at this point that I once again got a rather strong whiff of the offending smell. I thought just for a second that the smoke that was going to be coming from the cigarette would quite easily overcome this offensive odour. I lit the cigarette and reluctantly took the first puff.

Unusual but not too bad, "remember Don these are better for you than your usual brand " a little voice inside my head said calmly. "Right" said I in return, another puff. From here on in each puff just got worse and worse, the smell was getting stronger and the nasty herbs which the packet declines to exactly tell you are were evidently now infecting the smoke I was inhaling as well as the external smell from the packet. At this point there was nothing the little voice could say to make me continue with this very unpleasant experience.

I smoked a couple of normal cigarettes in their usual pattern and then somewhat reluctantly decided to try another herbal effort. This time I never even got past the couple of puffs before I was stubbing out the disgusting excuse for a cigarette. Not that ordinary cigarettes are any less disgusting to some, but these take the biscuit. My son and my wife were now in the vicinity and were commenting on the peculiar odour, which was now floating freely around. My wife rushed to get one of her favoured scented candles in an attempt to rid us of the smell.

My three-pound odds had not been well spent and there was no way that smoking these would help me reduce my increasing consumption of ordinary cigarettes. I guess that if perhaps the smell had been less unpleasant I just might have endeavoured to try a bit harder, but at that stage I was quite happy to bin the remaining 16 or 17 fags and return to the sanctity of good old Rothman's Royals.

Summary: Not a pleasant experience
