Advantages: Stress, 'fresh' air
Disadvantages: Cost, health, litter
I find smoking to be a disgusting habit and I can honestly say that I've never tried it nor been tempted to.
I did approve of the smoking ban being put in place, although now it means walking past bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants in the street that are lined with smokers and smoke - a definite disadvantage! It is however better to go out all freshly showered and not have to come back and wash my hair again because it smells of smoke.
I think the only possible advantage of smoking is extra 'fresh' air - my friend at work who smokes gets up from her desk and goes outside other than at lunchtime, and it's good to have a break and stretch your legs. But you could do that without having to smoke!
Smoking is also really expensive, and is getting increasingly so. Obviously it's an addiction which is hard to kick for most people, though I know a surprising amount of people who are 'social smokers', who tend to be looked down on by both smoker and non-smokers! I have also noticed with the increased stress at work more and more people are taking up smoking!
You also have the cigarette ends everywhere which leaves such a mess - I think it's the 'trail sign' for new smokers to the area as they can tell where the smoking places are!
I also hate seeing people smoking near their children; my parents smoked when I was growing up but they never did it near me. The adverts on TV about children and smoking were an interesting way to look at it I think.
I think now I'm more surprised when I find out someone is a smoker than when I was younger, where everyone seemed to smoke. Either this is something that goes in and out of fashion, of the government has improved things a lot with advertising, implementing the smoking ban etc. Time will tell I think.
Summary: Nasty
