Advantages: Not really advantages, keeps me sane
Disadvantages: smelly, expensive and becoming anti social
Tobacco smoking is the practice where tobacco is burned and the vapours either tasted or inhaled. The practice began as early as 5000-3000 BC. Many burnt incense during religious rituals, which was later adopted for pleasure or as a social tool Tobacco was introduced to the old world in the late 1500s where it followed common trade routes. The substance was met with frequent criticism, but became popular nonetheless.German scientists formally identified the link between smoking and lung cancer in the late 1920s leading the first anti-smoking campaign in modern history. The movement, however, failed to reach across enemy lines during the Second World War, and quickly became unpopular thereafter In 1950, health authorities again began to suggest a relationship between smoking and cancer. Scientific evidence mounted in the 1980s, which prompted political action against the practice. Rates of consumption from 1965 onward in the developed world have either peaked or declined They however continue to climb in the world
Smoking is the most common method of consuming tobacco, and tobacco is the most common substance smoked. The agricultural product is often mixed with other additives and then pyrolyzed. The resulting vapors are then inhaled and the active substances absorbed through the alveoli in the lungs. The active substances trigger chemical reactions in nerve endings which hightens heart rate, memory, alertness, and reaction time Dopamine and later endorphins are released, which are often associated with reward and pleasure. As of 2000, smoking is practised by some 1.22 billion people. Men are more likely to smoke than women, however the gender gap declines with younger age. The poor are more likely to smoke than the wealthy
Many smokers begin during adolescence or early adulthood. During the early stages, smoking provides pleasurable sensations and thus serves as a source of positive reinforcement. After an individual has smoked for many years, the avoidance of withdrawal symptoms and negative reinforcement become the key motivations. I myself started smoking after catching my elder brother smoking and to get himself out of trouble he said i should try it too. Ironic isn't it that some twenty years later it contributed to my fathers death and now my brother has lung cancer that has now spread to his brain
yet still i still have no inclination to give up smoking.
Summary: More of a way of life to some although its had its effects of my close family, I still do it

- 31/07/09 I gave it up more than 10 years ago but I still want a smoke sometimes. It's really hard to do and I think you need to be in the right frame of mind when you start if you really want to quit. Interesting review! |

- 30/07/09 Some of us just can't give up, no matter how hard we try. It keeps me sane too. Without my ciggies I turn from a very calm, genial and placid-natured person into a roaring, shrieking, impatient, screeching, rabidly angry monster. The longest I ever managed to quit for was 6 months and the severity of the withdrawal symptoms for me at the end of that 6 month period were just as bad as the first day of quitting. Everybody told me the withdrawal would only last a couple of weeks, and that in a couple of months, I'd be free of the addiction. That might have been how it was when they gave up, but it wasn't the case for me. |

- 30/07/09 Apparently tobacco is more difficult to give up than some hard drugs. I used to smoke, gave it up 2 years ago. Not easy. |
