Born To Play Fireman Sam - Friction Jupiter with Sound & Figures
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
My son goes through phases of different TV programmes which seem to just go round in circles every month. One of these programmes is fireman Sam which I'm sure is the same with many little boys. My son already had the no sounds, no friction version of this from Argos so when I seen them for 3 for £10 at play I was actually buying them for stocking fillers for my nephews as I cant resist a bargains. At the time I didn't realise they included sound friction and characters. So when they arrived one went in as a birthday present for my boy aged 3.
I believe they usually retail at £10-£15 and are recommended for ages 3+. You receive Jupiter the fire engine and I received Sam penny and tom with the version I am reviewing. There is an on/off which at the bottom of the engine but my son soon found that so I had no chance to escape the noise lol. It takes 3 AAA batteries which are supplied and can be replaced at the bottom of the vehicle.
This fire engine is one of many accessories you can but related to the popular fireman Sam show. It came in a see through box and like I say in all my reviews in far too much packaging for a toy that size. The 3 characters are just the right size for the engine and are very like the TV characters. Sam and penny are dressed in there blue fire fighter uniforms and tom in his red mountin rescue uniform also modelled very well on the series characters.
It is very like the engine used in the TV show and is bright red in colour and made out of plastic. There are 2 doors that open for characters to be inserted into wing mirrors shutters on each side (that don't do any thing just for show) a ladder at the back of the engine that can be pulled out and attached to the engine and one of my sons favourite features is a compartment where a water hose is rolled up and can be pulled out to play.
There is an arm at the bottom of the engine that can be pulled out and used to steady it when stationary. On top of Jupiter is a yellow crane arm to lift the characters up which spins fully round and is very easy to lift and use. It seems very strong and the characters stand in it very well.
Also it has the feature of friction movement my son loves running it over the same spot and then letting it race with his other vehicles and this feature is what keeps him busy for the longest as he loves to see it shoot across the room.
The main upgrade to this engine that my son's previous one did not have was the lights and sound. At the top centre of Jupiter is a button which when you press says 5 or 6 phrases with the same voice as in the TV programme. Great fires of London are one of my sons favourite and also when it plays the siren sound and the lights flash is another. He will push the button over and over again just to get to them 2 phrases.
Now for my negatives of the toy not many but here they are,
The shutters do not lift which my son was very disappointed with.
Also the main problem comes with the water hose it is easy to pull out and use but to roll it back on the reel and shut the door is very difficult even for me so for a young child to do I would think would be impossible. That is now not a problem as Connor has actually pulled that compartment door off so there is another flaw there as it just hangs out if not rolled up.
Other than them few things this is a very well made toy that is brilliant for young fireman Sam fans to enjoy and has produced many hours of fun for my little boy and girl. I would definitely recommend this product as it has lasted well but I would shop around for them I believe play.com have similar versions without the figures for £5 at the moment.
Summary: perfect for any Sam lover
