A good toy if you have other items from the range

My son was given this Bruder trailer and round bales for Christmas last year shortly after his second birthday. As part of the same gift he also received a Bruder New Holland Tractor from the same Bruder range of toys.

This is a green flat bed trailer with red bars at each end to hold your bales in place. The whole thing is made of hard plastic. The hitch part of the tractor is black and there is a support that you can move up and down to keep the trailer stationary. The wheels are made of hard rubber and move freely. The eight bales that you receive are made of hard beige plastic and are textured to look like hay bales. The bales are hollow but are very hard so there is no risk of them being squashed or becoming dented. This is quite a large toy and the trailer measures 15cm wide by 45cm long including the towing part.

My son loves this trailer and plays with it on an almost daily basis. He also has a tractor to pull the trailer and a Manitou Telescopic Loader (see my other review) so he can load his bales onto the trailer with the Manitou and then "drive" his tractor around the floor to another part of his "farm". I think without having at least a tractor this toy would be of very little entertainment value.

The trailer is quite well made but is a bit on the flimsy side. The bar supports on each end that hold the bales on are not fixed and can fold in and out but unfortunately do come off. These bars are also quite fragile and one of ours got broken on Christmas Day after being trodden on. I have tried to fix it with superglue but it has broken again in the same place. The wheels are very sturdy and nice and chunky and turn well without having to be forced. The toy is also quite large and so does cause a storage problem.

Despite those couple of things I think the toy is very good value as it has been so entertaining for my son.

I would recommend any of the Bruder toys to anyone with children who like tractors and farm toys. The attention to detail is excellent and they are just like the real thing. They are big hard wearing, and real value for money. I would definitely recommend this if you already have some tractors as this toy is really only any use if used in conjunction with other farm toys.

Bruder is a German company that specialises is making realistic scale models of farming machinery and vehicles. You can get everything from key rings to combine harvesters and they are all really realistic. The scale models start as small as 1:128 and go up to 1:16. There are three ranges available, the mini series, the professional series which includes the Bale Transporter Trailer and a range called Roadmax which is specifically designed for younger children. The Roadmax range doesn't have any of the real life detailing of the Professional range but they are still excellent. They are big vehicles made of hard plastic with big chunky rubber wheels. For more information on any of the Bruder ranges go to www.bruder.de/ea

My Mother in Law paid £12.50 for our Bale Trailer from our local country store, www.cobbscountrystore.co.uk they also do mail order but postage can be costly. I don't think that any of the Bruder toys are available from places like Toysrus but they are widely available online at sites like www.amazon.co.uk.

I don't think you can get more realistic farm toys that these.
