Like many kids their age, my three sons all love Peppa Pig. Last Christmas, while shopping in Makro, I saw that Grandpa Pig's boat was reduced to £7.50, so jumped at the opportunity to add to their collection of Peppa toys. As with all of the Peppa Pig toys, the boat looks exactly like it does in the cartoon, and it comes with Grandpa Pig, George and Peppa figures. George and Peppa are both wearing yellow life jackets, which led to questions from my four year olds and the chance to explain why it's important to wear life jackets on boats. An unexpected bonus teaching moment!
It was lucky that this was a present from Santa. In our house, all the toys Santa brings are already taken out of their packaging for when the kids come down on Christmas morning. If one of our sons had received this as a gift in its packaging, they would have been driven mad by the wait as we struggled to remove it from the box. Plastic ties are the norm for kid's toys these days, but this packaging actually involved screws! I think that's a bit much!
The boat can play several sounds, and mercifully, has an on/off switch (so many toys these days don't seem to!) Theoretically, you puch down on the cabin in the middle and the boat speeds of, playing on of the sounds. In reality, the cabin is very, very stiff, and despite having had it for nearly a year, it hasn't gotten any easier to press down. It's difficult for me to do and impossible for my sons. What exactly is the point of a toy that a child can't operate by his or herself? It can be pushed around by itself, and my youngest son is very attached to it, but it is a bit disappointing that the mechanism isn't easier to use, as he loves listening to the boat music.
The construction quality is, for the most part, great. The boat itself is really sturdy, and even with being bashed about a bit, it hasn't cracked or splintered. The flagpole, bell and throttle on the deck are all made of a slightly more flexibly plastic, probably to prevent breakage. However, this didn't stop my three from breaking all of those pieces off, so be wary if you are giving this to a young toddler. The figures themselves are great. As usual with Peppa figures, they are all attached to round bases, and they have been fully integrated into the other Peppa playsets we own.
Overall, this is a great colourful toy that's quite durable. But the problem with the cabin is a huge let down, considering this is the toy's main selling point. At the price we got it for, it's a forgivable flaw. But I've judged my star rating on the average price this boat retails at, and I think that it is definitely not worth paying over £15 for. If your child is a Peppa fan and you see this for sale at a reduced price, I would recommend it, but by no means pay over a tenner for it.
Peppa Pig - Grandpa Pig's Boat
As some of you may know from my other reviews, my youngster is a great fan of Peppa Pig. Peppa Pig is a television programme seen on Nick Jr and Channel 5 Milkshake and follows Peppa, the little pig, and her family and friends as they have fun and laughter in their day-to-day lives.
Among the many Peppa Pig toys my little one has, is Grandpa Pig's boat which was bought for a Christmas present. We were able to pick this up for £10.00 at our local B&M store and it is now on Amazon for £13.00 though can also be found for double what we paid.
Grandpa Pigs boat is a huge hit with my little one. It comes with three figures; Grandpa Pig, Peppa and George with Peppa and George wearing life jackets. George is also wearing a non-detachable pirate hat. The boat itself is exactly like the one seen on the programme with blue sides and a wooden coloured top. The main part of the boat is very sturdy and lives easily through bumps and bangs, though on the top are three little poles; a pirate flag pole, a bell on a pole and a little gear stick. These can be bent easily and, although they have not snapped off on our boat, I can see that with a little more force, they may. Also there is a small propeller on the back of the boat which is just as flimsy. This is a shame as the rest of the boat and the figures are perfectly made. The figures even stand on a base so their little legs are safe from breakages!
The boat takes three AAA batteries which work the sound, and the movement works whether battery is in or not. You may be pleased to know that the sound can be turned off under the boat though my youngster figured this out very easily! The sound is not too loud and has a few different phrases; Grandpa Pig saying 'Welcome aboard Me Hearties', and 'All Sail' and 'Peppa Ring the Bell'. Peppa also says 'Eye Eye Captain Grandpa'. There are also a couple of simply sound phrases with no talking. This is a bell ringing and a Peppa Pig boat tune. The movement can be done by pushing the 'cabin' part of the boat down which moves the boat forward. This moves forward really well, even on thick carpet.
My little one absolutely loves this boat, and I personally think that it was a great buy. One to definitely add to the collection!
My local B&M store have started stocking alot of Peppa pig toys some at half the price of what I see online and in the catalogues. This was the latest addition I saw last month along with a couple of others that were at reasonable prices so I purchased it for my sons 2nd birthday.
The boat was £12.99 I hadnt actually seen it before and when I googled it I did find it for £22 so I saved a good amount but I was unsure of wether it was a bath toy as theres one pretty much the same thats for the bath.
**This one is NOT for the bath**
My sons reaction on his birthday was very excited, couldnt wait to play with it. One problem stopping this from happening was the packaging. Like most toys these days this was in an oversized box, covered in plastic, kept in with plastic ties and to add to that screws aswell! This took daddy quite some time to get into and then add batteries. (3AAA)
The boat is plastic, not flimsy quite strong like other Peppa toys. Just like the picture and Grandpa pigs boat in the programme it is blue with a brown deck. There is a flag pole, a pole with the bell on and the controls. In the middle is a cabin area. This cabin area makes the boat move. If you push it right down it whizzes the boat away-quite fast, doesn't topple over and also plays the songs while it goes.
There are also portholes along the sides of the boat one of which is a button for the songs-but its not obviously placed so the kids might not find it.
The only problem we have had with this is the strength needed to push the cabin down. It seems very stiff but not like new stiff, like its going to stay that stiff. My my children can push it down but you can see how difficult it is for them.
The boat comes with Grandpa pig, Peppa and George. Both young piggies are wearing life jackets and all 3 figures are on round stands (like the peppa family that comes with the house) this is so they can be fitted into the holes on the decks floor so they stand and dont fall out. Again these are a bit difficult to put into the holes but think thats so they dont fall out when the boat is moving.
Overall Im very happy with this toy it was worth the money and my kids really enjoy playing with it.
When it was finally set up my son came running in with it showing everyone. He put it on the floor and was pushing it round.
We bought my son this boat for christmas as he is a huge Peppa Pig fan.
I have to say it took quite a while to get this boat out of the packaging , I don`t know why the manufacturers feel that there should be so many wire ties on these toys , they are certainly not safe for children if they were to get hold of them!
The boat is made out of a strong plastic it is mostly blue in colour with the deck being brown, there is a flagpole with a pirate flag , a bucket which is fixed to the deck and on the other side of the deck there is another flagpole with a bell. There is also a fixed engine control lever , and underneath the boat are 4 wheels.
On each side of the ship are little portholes , one of the portholes is a button where you will hear a phrase such as"Welcome aboard me hearties".
Also included with the boat is Grandpa Pig is dressed in purple with a purple sailors hat , he is standing on like a round disc and you are basically able to move his arms and legs forward and back.
Peppa and George are being good little pigs as they are wearing their life jackets , George is also wearing a pirate hat. Again you can move the arms and legs on Peppa and George.
All 3 characters will fit in one of the holes that is located on the deck.
**Modes of Play**
Underneath the boat you will find a switch and battery compartment , you can switch the boat to Try Me , On , or Off.
Try Me and On basically play the same sounds except in ON mode you also get a Nautical Piper Tune.
You can either push the boat across the room, or if you push down the cabin it will go across the room on its own.
**What do I think?**
Compared to some of the other Peppa Pig toys this boat is quite good and the boat itself is made quite well but there are some downsides.
The cabin is very hard to push even I find it quite difficult , my son gets quite frustrated and upset as he wants to do it by himself.
The flagpole with the pirate flag is bent , this happened after my son played with the toy for a couple of days* The engine control lever is broken , it was just too flimsy
According to the tv ad you just push the cabin down and away the boat goes across the room , the boat does not work well on a carpet.
Arms and legs of the characters are a bit flimsy but so far they have survived even though my son can be quite rough with them.
I think this toy could have been designed a lot better just like some of the other Peppa Toy stuff , my son however loves his boat and has a lot of fun playing with it.
