Advantages: big, strong & sturdy, easy to use
Disadvantages: its quite large so if you have limited space it mau be a problem
Even at 24 i think this toy is brilliant!! My youngest (2 in November) is Cars obsessed, we cannot walk through a car park without him touching cars, i think he honestly believes they are alive like the film. We have to watch the film Disney Cars every single day, doesn't matter if its 1 or 2 as long as its cars. I saw this playset reduced in Argos from 70.00 down to 30.00 quite a few months ago and stashed it away for my youngests 2nd birthday on 14th November. He is obsessed with disney cars so i knew this would be a big hit.
*-*-*-*-*-The Race Track-*-*-*-*-*
The set is made by Fisher Price so you know you are getting quality, the age recommendation is 3-7 years but as said above my little boy got it for his 2nd birthday and uses this set well, as does his 4 year old brother. It comes in a large box which in itself looks impressive. It comes unassembled but wasnt hard to put together, we spent about 10 mins setting it up, followed by the clear instructions, then inserting the batteries and putting stickers on the required parts.
The race track has scene setters based on the 3 venues from around the world, so London, Italy, Tokyo, each scene setter is based on 2 location. It is in an oval shape that is burgundy and grey with a brown ramp, finished off blue railings, green/yellow flags and 3 red scene setters to give the appearance of a real race track. There is also a starting point with a push down black/white flags that are pushed down by a red button to let the cars race off. The blue camera is also featured that you can use to knock cars off of the track.
The set is is 29inches wide and 40inches long. It comes with 3 bridges to hold the ramp up so it wont just fall down, making it durable unlike other race tracks my 2 boys have owned. Lightning mcqueen and francesco bernoulli are part of this set but others can be purchased separately (i have found them quite expensive at 10.00 per car so have so far only added tow mater to our set so far). The cars are pretty chunky at 12.5cm long and 7.6cm wide but we feel this makes the playset easier to use for smaller people.
When shaken Lightning Mcqueen has 2 sayings:
'im not scared of francesco'
'great see you soon amigo
he will also rev his engine
When shaken Francesco will say:
'See you at the finish line mcqueen'
he will also rev his engine
To start play you just shake the cars up, place them on the starting line with the barage up, then press the red button that will lower the barrier allowing the cars to race off. The cars will stop based on how long you have shaken them for, so shake them for a longer time to have them race for longer. So when they stop you just start again.
*-*-*-*-*-What My Little Boy Thinks-*-*-*-*-*
My little boy can shake the cars with ease, then put them on the track ready for the race, he needs no help at all with getting the cars to move. While I knew the set looked amazing I wasn't sure how my little boy would use it, hes a year younger than the age recommendation and is behind on quite a few things but he absolutely adores this playset and uses it with ease. While he has chunky little hands he can easily grab the cars and zoom them around the track. The playset stays assembled in the boys bedroom as it is played with every day. The shake 'n' go idea is awfully simply but fantastic.
He doesn't own any other toys that you have to shake to work so this is a firm favourite with him. He also likes that the cars can go on our laminate flooring with no track needed, it means he can take the cars to nanny and granddads and still have as much fun.
My little boy has had the set for just over 7 weeks now, and still continues to play with this set every single day so feel i have got my moneys worth. My boys own an a lot of toys and its the 1 thing that is continuously played with every single day.
My little boys are i are thoroughly pleased with it, lots of positives and no negatives. Its very well made, strong and sturdy. Normally when thinking of race tracks i think of hot wheels etc, and most of those reviews put me off due to how flimsy some of them are, I wanted a race track (obviously Disney cars for for my obsessed 2 year old) but more importantly, something durable that I wouldn't have to spend my whole day setting up. We also own a dinosaur train track and when you compare it to this im terms of durability oh my goodness the difference!
Normally when you look at other race tracks and cars they are much thinner for the smaller cars, what we love about this set is that it is chunky so great for smaller children, not chunky that makes it hard to use, but we found Fisher Price have got it just right! The cars go round the track with ease, the track stays together well, unlike other tracks ive read reviews about. With the way the whole track is connected the cars can travel in both lanes by going up the ramp to get onto the inside lade so it doesn't ever get boring.
Another love for us about this set is simply how simple yet effective it is, I personally have not seen anything like this and we certainly own nothing like this so I wasn't sure how it would go down or if my boys would get the hang of it. Its simplicity at his best, literally....shake n go. The cars go as soon as they are shaken and go quite a distance if shaken for a while and we have had no problems at all with the cars not working (except when batteries are running low thanks to how much they are played with).
The cars are chunky so great for little hands, lots of detail, easy to use and a very good size (not so good if you have limited space but its easy enough to put away each time). I think 70.00 is a lot to pay for any race track but i can see my boys having quite a few years use out of this and im very pleased with my 30.00 spent! If you dont mind 2nd hand i would most definitely consider buying this set.
What i love about this set is how simpe it is to use. What little child doesnt like shaking things and cars?
I have not seen anything like this before, so to me makes it unique.
My 2year old loves this so much that he keeps climbing into the middle of the track which knocks the bridge and the ramp down but that isnt of fault to the toy just my boy getting so excited with it.
Cannot rate this highly enough! 5/5!
